21TuesdayFebruary182014WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.Strypesisabeautifulyoungladyshinydisposition.Thisstripedbeautyisadoptableandalsoverypretty.Pleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.NorthernersFellowshipItoahScott-InnsItoahScott-Innsraisedinaculturally-richhomewithsevensiblingsinFortSimp-sonbeforemovingtoYel-lowknifewastaughtbyherparentstoalwaysbeproudofherTlichoheritage.MyTlichocultureissuperimportanttome.ItsreallyshapedhowIunderstandtheworldshesaid.ButitwasntuntilshelefthomeandtheNorthtostudyattheUniversityofTorontothatsheunderstoodthetruevalueofbeingsurroundedbythatculture.Thiswasreallythebig-gestchangeformemov-ingreallyfaraway.TobehonestthersttimeIcameherewasabitofacultureshocktomeshesharedfromToronto.Whilethe26year-oldad-mitsshestillmisseshomeScott-InnssaidstudyinginTorontohasallowedhertoexperienceandlearnfrommanyotherculturesinsouth-ernOntario.Butthebiggestlessonshesaidwaslearn-ingthatherowncultureisapartofherregardlessofwhereshegoes.MyTlichocultureIthinkitsjustinherentinanythingIdo.Myparentsalwaysraisedmetohaveastrongsenseofprideandconnectiontoourculture.AlloftheworkthatIdothelearningthatIdoisallgroundedinmyTlichobeliefsshesaid.ConnectingculturewithresearchintheNorthNWTwomenchooseAboriginalfocusforNorthernfellowshipScott-InnsisjustmonthsawayfromnishingaBach-elorinAboriginalStudiesandEthicsSocietyandLaw.Herplanistogotolawschool-agoalbornoutofadesiretoservetheNorth.IstartedlearningmoreaboutwhatshappeningintheNorthwithlandclaimsandselfgovernmentagree-mentsandthisstruggleforselfdeterminationsoIfeltlikethatwasanareawhereIhadtheskillsandabilitytomakesomesortofcontribu-tionshesaid.Inkeepingwithherinter-estinlandissuesScott-Innschosetostudylandsteward-shipfortheJaneGlasscoNorthernFellowship.Herresearchwilllookatwaystostrengthencollaborativelandstewardshipinlightofgrowingresourcede-velopmentparticularlyinDenendeh.HistoricallywehaveacollectiveresponsibilityasMyTlichocultureIthinkitsjustinherentinanythingIdo.Myparentsalwaysraisedmetohaveastrongsenseofprideandconnectiontoourculture.AlloftheworkthatIdothelearningthatIdoisallgroundedinmyTlichobeliefs.ItoahScott-InnsJaneGlasscoNorthernFellowTohaveaclearvisionofmyfutureIreallyneededtohaveanunderstandingofwhereIcomefromandwhatitmeanstome.NinaLarssonJaneGlasscoNorthernFellowDenepeopletostewardallofDenendehregardlessofthelinesdrawnonthemapofdifferentlandclaimter-ritoriesshesaid.Scott-Innssaidthatre-centlytherehasbeenmove-menttowardsmorecollabora-tionintheDenendehandshehopesherfellowshipresearchcanstrengthenthoseefforts.ItsanopportunityformetoworktowardsmakingmeaningfulcontributionstotheNorthtocausechangeandtondwaystostrengthentheNorthforfuturegenera-tionsshesaid.NinaLarssonForNinaLarsontheim-portanceofconnectingwithherDenecultureknowsnolimits.The28year-oldbornandraisedinFrancetoaGwichinmotherandSwedishfatherelectedtouprootherlifeandmovetoYellowknifefiveyearsagotobeclosertohercul-turalroots.IwantedtolearnmoreaboutmycultureandbeconnectedtotheNorthsheexplained.Whilehermotherhadraisedherwithanappre-ciationforherGwichinheritageLarssonsaidshewantedtobeclosertotherichtraditionsandbeabletopracticethem.Ithinkcultureisaveryimportantfacetofaper-sonslifeanditisessentialtotheirwell-beingshesaid.Tohaveaclearvi-sionofmyfutureIreallyneededtohaveanunder-standingofwhereIcomefromandwhatitmeanstome.OverthelastfiveyearsLarssonhastakentoapathofself-discoverythatin-cludedstudyingatDechintaUniversityconnectingwithfamilyinInuvikandpar-ticipatingintheAborig-inalPeoplesTelevisionNetworksDeneAJourneyTVseries.Larssonsaidherexperi-encereconnectingwithherculturehasmadehermorecondentaboutheridentityasanAboriginalwomanandfutureleader.Itwaswiththatinmindthatshechosetofocusonindige-nouswomeninleadershipforherJaneGlasscoNorth-ernFellowship.ThekeyquestionthatIhopetoansweriswhatdoesitmeantobeanindigenouswomanleadertodayshesaid.Thatcanalsogiveapicturetoyoungerindig-enousgirlswhocanknowwhatittakestobealeader.Beingaleaderisnotjustonthepoliticalsideitcanmeanbeingaleaderinthecommu-nityinyourworkplacewithyourfriendsandfamily.Larssonsaidshehopestodrawonsuccessfulexam-plesofNorthernwomen-centeredleadershipinitia-tivesinthecircumpolarworldinordertosuggesteffectivepolicymeasuresinCanadasNorth.TwoFirstNationswomenfromtheNWTwhowerechosenfortheJaneGlasscoNorthernFellowshiphaveelectedtostudyAboriginalleadershipandstewardshipintheNorthfortheircontributionstothefellowshipsresearch.ItoahScott-InnsandNinaLarssonwereselectedalongwithsevenotherfellowsfromtheNWTNunavutYukonandNunatsiavutforthe18-monthprogramthatbringstogetheryoungself-directedNorthernerstostudyissuesrelatingtotheircommunities.NorthernJournalproledbothwomenandtheiruniqueconnectiontotheircultures.ByMARIACHURCHItoahScott-InnssaysherfellowshipwillfocusonlandstewardshipintheNorth.NinaLarssonsaysherresearchwillexploreIndigenouswomeninleadership.PhotoscourtesyoftheWalterDuncanGordonFoundation
