EducationLeadership24TuesdayFebruary182014ByMARIACHURCHThenon-protNorthernYouthLeadershipSocietyisonceagainexpandingitsreachintheNorthwestTer-ritoriesbyholdingthreenewwintercampsinMarchtoteachyouthleadershipskillsdirectlyontheland.JillGildayNorthernYouthsnewexecutivedi-rectorsaidthatforthersttimetwooftheupcomingwintercampswillbeheldex-clusivelyfor11to14year-olds-ayoungergroupthanprevi-ouscampshavecateredto-inordertogivetheyoungstersatasteofwhattheleadershipcampscanoffer.ItiskindofanintroductiontoourcampsfortheyoungerkidsinhopesthattheyhaveagreattimeandwanttocomewithusagainforadifferentoneinthesummertimeGil-daysaid.TheintroductioncampswillbeheldinHayRiverwiththehelpofShawnBuckleyalocalcommercialshermanwhohasvolunteeredtoteachthebuddingleadersthebasicsofwintershing.Buckleywhohasworkedsuccessfullyasashermanforthelast25yearstoldTheJournalheislook-ingforwardtosharinghisNewNorthernYouthleadershipcampsplannedon-the-landskillswiththeyoungcampers.Thesekidstheyhavetobestimulatedindifferentways.Ifyouareteachingthemhands-onitsquitedifferentthanlearninginaclassroomhesaid.Ithinkitsveryveryimportantanditsnottalkedaboutenough.GildaysaidBuckleyslife-longconnectiontotheHayRivershingindustryisidealforteachingtheyouththeimportanceofprotectingthenaturalenvironment.Asanaddedbonuscamp-erswillgettosamplefreshwintersh.WellbehavingabitofashfrywhichhopefullythekidswillenjoyGildaysaid.ThethirdcampthatNorth-ernYouthhasplannedforthisMarchwillrunmorealongthelinesofpreviousyearsexcursions.HeldatYayaLakejustnorthofInuvikforyouthaged14to17theweek-longcampwillchallengeparticipantstoliveoffthegridandconnectwiththelandthroughhuntingtrap-pingandshing.Itincorporatestraditionalknowledgefromtheregionthatwearefunctioninginaswellasleadershiptrain-inginthehopesthatyouthlearnalittlebitmoreabouttheirsurroundingsandtheirculturebutthenalsocreateanattachmenttotheirenvi-ronment...toprotectitinthefutureGildaysaid.NorthernYouthformerlyknownasTaigawasbornin2008asasubsidiaryoftheYoungWomensChristianAssociationYWCAwiththemandateofempower-ingyoungfemaleleadersintheNWT.Theorganizationhassinceexpandedintoitsownnon-protorganizationandbranchedoutthemandatetoincludecampstailoredtojustgirlsjustboysandseveralco-edcamps.ThisisthesecondyearNorthernYouthhasofferedcampsduringthewinterseason.LastyearswintercampheldatBlissLakejustoutsideofYellowknifewasanencouragingsuccessGildaysaid.AlocalofYellowknifeGildaystartedherpositionasexecutivedirectorforNorthernYouthamonthagoandsaidsheonlyregretsnotworkingforthemearlier.IwasalwaystoooldtobeacamperbutlookingbackIalwaysknewaboutthemsonowIwishthatwhenIwasastudentIdworkedforTaigainthesummertimeshesharedwithalaugh.TheNorthernYouthcampscost100percamperachargethatdoesntcomeclosetocoveringtheex-penseofaweek-longcampbutismadepossiblethroughGNWTgrantsandcom-munitysponsorshipGil-daysaid.Wewouldneverwanttheregistryfeetobeabarriershesaid.Wewanttomakesurethatallyouthhaveop-portunitieslikethese.Formoreinformationortoregisterforthecampsgoonlinetowww.north-ernyouth.caThesekidstheyhavetobestimulatedindifferentways.Ifyouareteachingthemhands-onitsquitedifferentthanlearninginaclassroom.ShawnBuckleyPhotoJennyCrawfordShaniaDesjarlaisrightchopsrewoodforthersttimewithChelseaEliasnextinlineduringtheNorthernYouthwinterleadershipcamplastyear.
