16TuesdayMarch182014BackrowlefttorightShaniaDesjarlaisTiannaHermanNorthlandSchoolDivisionSuperintendentofSchoolsDonnaBarrettandAlexDashcavich.FrontrowlefttorightRenayHermanBrianBurginRachelCheechumParkerFlettandHaileyBouchier.EightNothlandstudentsreceiveRARAawardsFirstNationsAwardsByMARIACHURCHEightyoungstudentsfromtheNorthlandSchooldivisionwerehonouredatthe26thannualRegionalAboriginalRecognitionAwardsRARAfortheirpositivecontributionstolifeintheRegionalMu-nicipalityofWoodBuffaloRMWB.TheawardsrecognizeeachofthestudentsasJu-niorAchieversfortheirhardworkinareasofschoollifelikeattendancetraditionandlanguagesportsandcommunityinvolvement.ThestudentswerefromAnzacCommunitySchoolBillWoodwardSchoolinAnzacConklinCommu-nitySchoolAthabascaDeltaCommunitySchoolinFortChipewyanFortMcKaySchoolandFatherR.PerinSchoolinJanvier.EachyearRARAlaudsselectAboriginalrolemod-elsinRMWBwhoaremak-ingstridestowardspro-motingtheircultureinthecommunity.ThisyearsawardsweregivenoutattheQualityHotelinGregoire.PhotocourtesyofNorthlandSchoolDivisionByMARIACHURCHFivewomenonefromeveryregionintheNWTarethelatestintheterri-torytorecieverecognitionforsupportingtheircom-munitiesinwaysthatoftengounnoticed.PamelaFaithGordonfromtheBeaufortDeltaregionHarrietGeddesfromtheDehchoKarenWillyoftheNorthSlavePatriciaModestefromtheSahturegionandSisterMarga-retAnnBeaudettefromtheSouthSlavewereallgivenWiseWomenawardsinYel-lowknifethismonth.ItstheworkthatsdonebycaretakersbyvolunteersandbywomeningeneralthatoftengoesunnoticedinthecommunityLorrainePhaneufexecutivedirec-toroftheStatusofWomenCounciloftheNWTtoldTheJournal.Inthiscaseitsfivewomenandtheyreallareveryhumble.EveryoneofFivewomeninthespotlightforWiseWomenAwardsWomensParliamentunderconsiderationbyGNWTNorthernersWomenthemwasshockedwhentheygottheawardeventhougheveryoneelseknowstheydeservethem.Itsamaz-ingthatpeopledontreal-izehowmuchtheydointhecommunityshesaid.Todate103womenhavereceivedWiseWomendes-ignationintheterritory.PremierBobMcLeodtheministerresponsibleforwomenwasaguestspeakerattheawardsnighttocon-gratulatethelatestawardwinners.TheeventSaturdaywasfollowedbyacelebrationofurbanAboriginalwomenintheeveningthathighlightedtraditionalclothingandarts.BotheventsmarkedInternationalWomensDay.WomensParliamentproposedAtthecouncilsbi-an-nualboardmeetingwithMcLeodinearlyMarchthepremiersproposaltodevelopaWomensPar-liamentcausedastirofexcitementfromthoseinattendance.Iampleasedthattheboardissupportiveofapro-posedideatoholdaWom-ensParliamentMcLeodsaidinarecentpressrelease.WomensParliamentwouldbemodeledafterthecurrentYouthandEldersParliamentsthatallowpar-ticipantstoshadowMLAsinthelegislaturetogetanideaofwhatpoliticallifewouldentail.WhilenodatehasbeensettolaunchtheWomensParliamentPhaneufsaidsheexpectsitwillstartupbeforethefederalterrito-rialandmunicipalelec-tionscurrentlyallsched-uledfor2015.WiththeonslaughtofelectionsnextyeartheStatusforWomenCouncilintheNWTplanstoonceagainofferacampaignschoolforwomenlookingtolearnmoreaboutrunninginanelectionororganizingapoliticalcampaign.Dateshavenotyetbeensetbutor-ganizersareaimingtostartthemupsoon.WomenintheNWTfacemanyhurdleswhenitcomestorunningapoliticalcam-paignwhichcanincludeisolationandlackofsupportorcondencePhaneufsaid.Inthelastterritorialelectionwedidhaveafairnumberofwomenrunningbutonlytwogotinshesaid.Therearechallengesaroundgettingpeopletovoteforwomen.Itsjustsocomplex.PhaneufsaidthecampaignschoolandaWomensPar-liamentcanbothgoalongwaytowardshighlightingtheimportanceandvalidityofwomeninofce.InJunetheNWTwillhostameetingofprovincialandterritorialministersre-sponsiblefortheStatusofWomen.LefttorightHarrietGeddesPamelaFaithGordonPatriciaModesteKarenWillyandSisterMargaretMaggieAnnBeaudetterecievetheirWiseWomenawards.PhotocourtesyoftheStatusofWomenCounciloftheNWT
