11TuesdayApril152014EducationHeritageByMARIACHURCHStudentsatDeninuSchoolinFortResolutionarefeel-ingalittlemoreconnectedtotheircultureafteraschool-wideheritagefairhadthemdelveintotraditionaltopicslikehandgameshuntingandjigging.Studentsweregivenfreerangetochooseanyheritage-basedtopicandspentweeksresearchingforpresentationsanddisplaystosharewhattheylearnedattheschoolsheritagefairlastWednesday.TopicsincludedCanadianRangersshingandJackKnox-aWoodBuffalowar-denfromtheearly1900s.BrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendentfortheSouthFortResolutionstudentsdelveintotheirheritageDeninuheritagefairwinners1stplaceAlexaMandevilleTraditionalFoods2ndplaceAidenMoesJackKnox3rdplacetieIssacSimon-BerriesandMichelleLafferty-JiggingSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilwasonhandtojudgetheheritageprojectsandsaidthestudentsen-thusiasmfortheirresearchwasfurtherevidenceoftheimportanceofinquiry-basedlearning.Itssomethingthestu-dentshaveaninterestinandtheyareencouragedtogodeeperintotheresearchhesaid.Youregivingthekidsdifferentwaystocollectthatinformationandsharethatinformation.Youdontalwayshavetodoitwithapencilandpaper.Grade4and5teacherLauraBouchersaidthestudentswerehypeduptolearnmoreabouttheirheritageandmanyofthembroughtthatexcitementintotheirhomesbygettingtheirparentsandsiblingsinvolvedintheresearch.Bouchersaidthestudentsinterviewedelderstolearnmoreabouttheirtopicspar-ticipatedinpracticessuchashuntingshingortradi-tionalgamesaspartoftheirresearchandvisitedthehis-toricalhomesofpeoplelikeKnox.Theyrenallyproudoftheircultureshesaid.RetirednurseOzellBordenhasjudgedtheheritagefairatDeninuforyearsandsaidshesawavastimprovementinstu-dentcondenceandinterac-tionwiththejudgesthisyear.Theyreveryopentotellyouabouttheircultureandtheirheritagewhichisawe-somereallybecauseyouhavekidswithsuchaninter-estintheirhistoryandthatcomesoutnowshesaid.TherstplacewinneroftheheritagefairwillgoontopresenttheirresearchattheterritorialheritagefairinYel-lowknifefromMay8to11.Theheritagefairwasfol-lowedbyacareerfairintheafternoonthatintroducedthehighschoolstudentstopotentialpost-secondaryoptionsatAuroraCollegeandemploymentoptionswithvariousorganizationsandbusinessesaroundtheterritory.PhotosMariaChurchEthanMcKayshareshispresentationwithRCMPofcerAlLAbbe.JordonBouchershareshisresearchonhandgamesatDeninuSchoolsheritagefairlastweek.FromleftDarrylBalsilleJohnnyBaileyandJacobBouchershowofftheirheritagedisplays.DezmondRabiscaisreadytopresentongamestotrainhuntersattheDeninuSchoolheritagefair.ChaslynMcKayrightpresentsonhandgamestoaheritagefairjudge.
