EducationScience10TuesdayMay132014SportsRecreationTrackFieldByMARIACHURCHFortSmithshighschoolsci-encestudentstestedouttheirchemistrybiologyandphysicsknowledgelastweekbygoingheadtoheadinascience-basedcompetitionatAuroraCollegesThebachacampus.EggdropswheelchairracesandspectrometerAuroraCollegeopensdoorstosciencecelebrationbuildingwerejustafewoftheactivitiesthatchallengedthestudentsduringtherst-timeeventheldinconjunctionwithScienceRendezvousaCanada-widecelebrationofscience.Studentswereallsmilesastheytooktoawheel-chairandnavigatedanobstaclecourseracingforthebesttimeorlaunchedanatlatlatafakebearasAuroraCollegeinstructorGeorgePetersonuppedtheadrenalinefactorbysay-ingImaginethistimeitscomingatyou.ThekidsarelovingthisPaulWilliamKaeserhighschoolviceprincipalDanKearleysaidashewatchedateamofstudentsputto-getheraneggdroplandingpadoutofpaperstrawsandmaskingtape.Upforgrabsforthetopteamwereseveralgiftcertificatestolocalbusinesses.OrganizerSarahRosolenoftheSouthSlaveAuroraResearchInstitutesaidthepiloteventwaswellreceivedbythestudentsaswellasAuroraCollegestaffandparticipatinggroupswhichincludedtheThebachaandWoodBuffaloAstronomicalSocietyandtheFortSmithHealthandSocialServicesAuthority.Heldannuallysince2008ScienceRendezvouswascre-atedbyfourOntariouniversi-tieswiththegoaloftakingsci-enceoutofthelabandontothestreets.Lastyearmorethan160000peoplein30citiesacrossCanadaparticipated.PhotosMariaChurchDannyMacDonaldwatchesasAlexanderRobichaud-Vogttestsoutahomemadespectrometer.ByMARIACHURCHNWTStormtheterrito-ryshighschooltrackteamisreturningfromnationalswithprideaftercompetinginhurdlesjumpsanddashesagainstsomeofthebesthighschooltrackathletesinthecountry.Some18athletesfromhighschoolsacrosstheterritorymadethetrektoTorontolastweekendfortheNikeGrandPrixthebiggestna-tionalhighschooltrackandeldmeetinthecountrytocompeteagainstmorethan300athletesfrom24schoolsacross12provinces.Theteamhadthemorn-ingtowarmupbeforethemeetscheduledforFridayafternoonattheUniversityofTorontosVarsityStadium.Whenwewerewarm-ingupwewereabletoscopeouttheotherteamseewhatwereupagainst.ItsaprettyawesomevenueandagreatwayforourathletesNWTtrackteamtakesGrandPrixbystormtoseewhateliteathletesgothroughduringcompetitionStormcoachAllieMacDon-aldsharedwithTheJournalfromTorontolastweek.SarahIbeyastudentfromSt.PatrickhighschoolinYel-lowknifewasoneofthe18athletesatthemeetbutwasforcedtositoutthecompeti-tionbecauseofastressfrac-turetohershin.Despitethedisappoint-mentofnotcompetinginherscheduledeventswhichincludedthe100-mdash200-mdashandhighjumpIbeysaidshewasexcitedtobeinTorontotosupportherteammates.DenitelyIllbeouttherecheeringthemonshesaid.MacDonaldsaidtheteamsgoalgoingintothecompetitionwastoseemoremedalsthanthefourtheycamehomewithlastyear.FourmedalsisstillanamazingfeatcomingfromtheNorthbecausethereareveryhighlevelathletesthatwearecompetingagainstbutwearehopingtodothesameorbetterthanlastyearshesaid.IntheendNWTTeamStormmetthatgoalbybring-inghomeanotherfourmed-alsallinthe4x100-mrelayevent.FortSmithsThomasRhoneandKandisVilleb-runfromYellowknifebothwonsilverwhileKieraMan-devilleandDanielMelansonbothfromHayRivereachnabbedabronze.IntheeldeventsMacken-zieClowefromYellowknifeplacedfthingirlsshotputandeighthinhighjumpwhileMelansonplacedseventhinboyshighjump.InthetrackeventsDe-sireeBrownfromYellow-knifeplaced16thinthegirls800-mand9thinthe1500-m.JoelDemarckefromHayRivercamein13thintheboys1500-mwhileYellowknifesAlexKeefeplaced16thintheboys100-mdash.TeamStorms18highschoolathletesfromtheNWTcompeteinTorontoattheNikeGrandPrixlastweekend.PhotoTrojanOneMeganEvoythrowsanatlatlduringtheScienceRendezvouscompetitionheldforstudentsatAuroraCollegelastweek.AndreasRobichaud-Vogtracesagainsttimeashenavi-gatesawheelchairthroughthecollegedoor.
