YellowknifesDeneKoDayShelterclosesdoorsHealthauthoritylookingtoreopenshelterinnewlocationHealthWellnessShelters18TuesdayJune32014CongratulationsPWKGradsMayyoubesuccessfulinallofyourfutureendeavours.WishingyousuccessKionaByMARIACHURCHAfterarocky2014spentbalancingontheedgeofclo-suretheDeneKoDayShelterinYellowknifehasofciallyshutitsdoors.TheYellowknifeHealthandSocialServicesAu-thorityYHSSAan-nouncedtwoweeksagothedowntowndayshelterwouldbeclosingforgoodonMay31.SinceitopenedfourandahalfyearsagothedayshelterwasrunbytheJohnHowardSocietyuntilthatorganizationrelinquishedtheroleinlateMarchforc-ingthehealthauthoritytolookforanewcontractortorundayservicesandthwartascheduleddemolitionofthebuilding.InlateMarchweeksbe-forescheduledclosuretheNWTDisabilitiesCounciltookupthecallandagreedtorunthedayshelterforan-othertwomonths.Wesaidwewouldbewillingtostepinandtakeitoverbecauseatthattimeitwasstillquitecold.WeweresayingAtleastkeepitopenuntilthewarmerweatherDeniseMcKeeexecutivedirectoroftheNWTDis-abilitiesCounciltoldTheJournallastweek.McKeesaidtheauthor-itywasonlyabletosecureatwo-monthextensionwiththebuildingslandlord.Demoli-tionwillstilltakeplaceshortlyafterthecouncilvacates.RunningtheshelterwasajoyCouncilAccordingtoMcKeethecouncilenjoyedthetimerunningthedayshelterandwashappytoofferarangeofservicesandactivitiestothevisitors.Wehadalotofsup-portfromthecommunity.Wehadahaircuttingdaytherewasachesstourna-mentheldsowehadlotsofthingsthatwentonMcKeesaid.Ithinktherewasanewfocusontheshelterthatwentawayfromthatcorrec-tionsjudicialkindoflensetoamorehealth-relateddis-abilitylenseshesaid.Duringthetwomonthsthecouncilemployedatotalofsevenstaffmembersandprovidedservicestoanav-erageof45to50visitorsaday.Duringpeaktimesonholidayweekendsthedayshelterwouldsee70or80visitorsdaily.Oneofthethingswedidanticipateandwhichwaspresentthewholetimewasthatfeelingofanxietyforthepeopleaccessingitthink-ingWhatsgoingtohappenafterthisMcKeesaid.Itiswarmerweathersowerenotghting50belowtem-peraturesbuttheyrejustaroundthecorner.HealthauthorityplanstoreopenbyfallAccordingtoNathalieNadeauactingCEOwiththeYHSSAthehealthauthor-ityhasalreadycommittedatotalbudgetof300000to-wardsthecitysdayshelterfor2014-2015.WithmeetingsplannedforJunewiththesheltersstakeholdersthegoalistoreopentheshelterinanewlocationthisfallNadeausaidinanemail.McKeesaidtheNWTDis-abilitiesCouncilwillbeat-tendingmeetingstosharestoriesanddatacollectedduringitstimerunningtheshelter.Hopefullyeveryonewillbeabletoputtheirheadsto-getherandcomeupwithaso-lutionthatsgoingtobelongtermandgivethesupportsthatpeopleneedshesaid.Intheinterimovernightshelteringservicesareavail-ableforwomenattheCentreforNorthernFamiliesandformenattheSalvationArmy.PhotoNWTDisabilitiesCouncilAchesstournamentisheldattheDeneKoDayShelterinYellowknife.TheshelterwhichwasrunfortwomonthsbytheNWTDisabilitiesCouncilisnowclosed.
