8TuesdayJune32014FortSmithSeniorsSocietyFortSmithSeniorsSocietyANNUALGENERALMEETINGANNUALGENERALMEETING130p.m.TuesdayJune172014SeniorsRoom-Rec.CentreAgendaAgendaReportsFinancesAllseniorswelcomePleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.TheFSASisdesperatelyseekingvolunteersforthesummermonths.MostofourvolunteersareheadingoutoftownforJulyandAugust.IfyoucanhelppleasecallDixieat872-3516.FemaleYoungAdultGreyandwhitemixLookingforanewhomeEducationOnTheLandByMEAGANWOHLBERGAt19PascalErasmusofYellowknifehasjustbegunhispursuitofpost-secondaryeducationbuthasalreadyStudentsofDechintaswinterspringsemestershowofftheirhand-madebeavermittenstrappedandsewnwiththehelpofeldersthroughouttheland-basedcourse.DeneyouthconnectwithcultureatDechintaBushUniversityboasts11graduatesfromwinterspringsemesterseenmajortransformationsinhowheviewslearninghiscultureandhimself.TheyoungYellowknivesDeneFirstNationYKDFNmemberrecentlycompletedthesix-weekwinterspringse-mesterattheDechintaCentreforResearchandLearningalongwith10othergraduates-avaluableexperiencethathaschangedhisviewoftheclassroom.ItsshiftedmyperceptiononeducationandwhatIpri-oritizeinmyownpersonallifebecausebeforeIwasntfullyintunewithmycul-turewithmyidentity.Iwasveryconformedtoacertainnarrativeinsociety-assimi-latedalmostyoucouldsayhesharedwithTheJournal.SincegoingtherethewholeexperienceIfeellikeIhaveabetterappreciationformyidentitythatIholdhere.Thesemesterfeaturedcoursesinindigenousself-determinationsocialdeter-minantsofAboriginalhealthcommunitygovernanceandsustainabilityalongwithtimespentonthelandwitheldersharvestingmoosebeaverandsh.Erasmussaidthewayinwhichbothclassroomandland-basedcomponentswereequallyprioritizedinthepro-gramwasforhimprofound.Theywereonparwitheachothertheywereequaltoeachother.Onewasntmorevaluablethantheotherinthiscase.SoIreallyappreciatedthatandIthinkitmademeappreciatemyownculturewhereIcomefromasanAboriginalpersonhesaid.Aswellhavingaspacetoshareideaswithlike-mindedpeopleprovidedhimwithasenseofhopehesaid.CurrentlycompletinghisnalprojectforthecourseErasmusisbusyputtingto-getherafeasibilitystudyforthecommunityofNdiloonwaysthatYKDFNcanhelptoreduceitscarbonfoot-printandcontributionstoclimatechange.Erasmuswasrecentlyac-ceptedtoSimonFraserUni-versityinBurnabyBCwhereheplanstostudysociologystartingthisfall.Dechintahesaidwasagreatwaytopre-parewithouthavingtoleavehishometerritory.TheexperiencehelpedtorenethewaythatIviewedu-cationnowanyformofeduca-tionthatmaybewhetheritsculturalorinstitutionalwhat-ever.Ijustviewitinamorematurewayhesaid.Ihighlyrecommendittoanybodythatwantstopursuepost-second-aryeducation.Itsagreatrststepanditsveryfun.DechintachurningoutyoungleadersInitsfourthyearofdeliv-eringland-baseduniversity-accreditedprogrammingoutatBlachfordLakeLodgenorthofYellowknifeDechintahasevolvedintohavingastron-gerfacultyattractingandproducingengagedyoungpeopleinterestedinculturalrevitalizationdecolonizationandhealthyleadership.Ithinkwhatweresee-ingisDechintabecomingadestinationforyoungpeoplewhoareinterestedinleader-shipinthemostbroadsensesaidDechintasprogramdi-rectorErinFreeland-Ballan-tyne.Overthelastnumberofyearspeoplearecominghavingalreadybeeninvolvedintheircommunitiesandwantingtomakethemevenbetterandreallywantingtomobilizethatknowledge.Overtheyearsshesaidshesseentheformationofastrongnetworkofalumnidoingincrediblework.Aswetrackourgradsoverthelongtermwecanseethattheprogramisreallytrans-formativeandhelpspeoplesetoffinagooddirectionwhethertheyregoingtogobackandworkfortheirnego-tiatingteamorcontinuingoninpost-secondaryFreeland-Ballantynesaid.Nomatterwherepeoplegoitskindofadenitiveexperienceandhavingthatpositiveeduca-tionexperiencethatsreallysupportivecanreallybelife-changingforpeople.Thisspringscohortofstu-dentscamefromcommunitiesacrosstheNWTfromTulitatoColvilleLakeLutselKeFortSimpsonFortResolu-tionandYellowknifeaswellasRossRiverYukon.ItwasareallycoolmixofstudentsFreeland-Bal-lantynesaid.ThestudentsreallytaughteachotheralotfromtheregionsoftheNorthintermsofwhatsgoingon.AtthesemesterspeaktherewerealsoatotalofsevenchildrenoutatBlachfordLakeLodgewiththeirparentsat-tendingKidsUDechintason-the-landprogramforkids.FallsemesterisplannedtostartSept.7andgothroughallofSeptemberandOcto-ber.ThedeadlinetoapplyisJuly1.Thesemestermayseestu-dentsparticipateinacommu-nitycaribouhuntalongwithcoursesonindigenouslawDeneChanieindigenousself-determinationandmoreon-the-landlearningwithelders.TwoshortcoursesarealsoplannedforthisAugustoneforNWTeducatorsandaone-weekindigenousself-deter-minationcoursewithLeanneSimpsonandGlenCoulthard.Formoreinformationortoapplyvisitdechinta.caPhotoErinFreeland-Ballantyne
