TuesdaySeptember3020149ByDALICARMICHAELSekuhnetnmeansteacherinDneSnortheChipewyanlanguageafactthateightyear-oldBridgettMcKaylearnedthankstoherteacherAngieFabienattheDeninuSchoolinFortResolution.ThroughFabienseffortsusageoftheChipewyanlanguageattheschoolhasin-creased23percentearningtheinstitutionthisyearsNWTMinisterialLiteracyAwardfortheyouthcategory.IcreateallmyownmaterialFabiensaid.YouwalkintomyclassroomanditsanopenChipewyandictionary.Weusepuppetshands-onmoderntechnologysmartboardsandthekidstypeinthelanguageusingtheDenefont.MembersoftheSouthSlaveDivisionalEd-ucationCouncilSSDEChavebeentryingtointegratetheuseofAboriginallanguagesintotheircurriculumforyears.Fabiensstrongpersonalconnectiontothelanguagemadehereffortsallthemoresuccessful.Itsallaboutthestudents.Itstheiriden-tityitswhotheyareasDenepeopleFabiensaid.Ourlanguageisdyingsothesearethestudentsthatarebringingitoutoftheclass-roomintothehallwaysontotheplaygroundintothecommunitiesandathome.Fabienandotherteachersattheschoolen-couragetheirstudentstointegrateChipewyanintotheireverydaylives.ThehallwaysoftheschoolarecoveredinChipsignage.Atre-cessthekidsusethelanguagewhileplay-ingtheirgames.Afterschooltheygohomeandsharetheirknowledgewiththeirfami-liesandtheirelders.Whenyourelookingattheministerialawardsforliteracyyourelookingatindi-vidualsorgroupsthatgoaboveandbeyondwhatmightbeexpectedofthemandarere-allypromotingliteracyinonewayoranothermorethanjustforthemselvesbuttootherssaidBrentKaulbackassistantsuperinten-dentforSSDECwhosubmittedtheschoolsawardnomination.ItsnotjustlearninglanguageinschoolandsortofkeepingittherebuttheyreallyaretakingthatlanguageintotheirhomesandIthinkthatsreallyimportantforallofourcommunitiesforthelanguagestoreallybecomerevitalizedthatswhatneedstobehappeningandthatswhattheDeninustu-dentsaredoing.ThisisntthersttimeFabienhasbeenrecognizedforhereducationeffortslastyearshewasawardedwiththePrimeMinistersAwardforTeachingExcellence.Imreallyreallysotouchedbythesestu-dents.TheyareawesomechildrenandIamhonouredtoworkwiththemFabiensaid.Theyjustmotivatemesomuch.LiteracyadvocatedintheNorthDeninuSchoolwasamongahandfulofleadersawardedfortheirchampioningofliteracyintheNWT.TheTuktoyaktukCommunityLearningCentrewhichofferseducationalopportuni-tiesforyouthandadultsalikewasawardedtheorganizationliteracyawardinpartforin-structorGregGidmanseffortstoincludetheInuvialuktunlanguageinhisteachingmeth-ods.RobyneLeblancfromthesamegroupwasrecognizedforhercreativemethodsineducatingbuddingentrepreneurs.FormerexecutivedirectoroftheNWTLit-eracyCouncilHelenBalanoffwasnamedthisyearsLiteracyChampionforherfourdecadesofdedicationtowardsthedevelop-mentofeducationintheNWT.Since1973shehashadrolesasaneduca-torpolicydeveloperadministratorwriterresearcherandliteracyadvocate.Mostre-centlyBalanoffwasgiventhe2012QueensJubileeMedalforherwork.MarkSalvorwasnamedthisyearstopvolunteereducatorforhisdedicationtohisclients.MichelineRichardwasgiventheprestigiousprofessionaleducatorsawardforherwell-roundedmethodsofFrenchin-structionatEcoleSirJohnFranklinSchoolinYellowknife.SpecialOlympicsathleteJulieWhiteofFortProvidencewashonouredwiththisyearsCounciloftheFederationLiteracyAward.TheMinisterialliteracyawardsrecognizeexcellenceinacommitmenttoliteracyinanarrayofrolesincludingstudentteacherandorganization.Theyhavebeenrunningsince2002whentheawardwascreatedbythemin-isterofEducationCultureandEmployment.LiteracyawardshonourAboriginallanguageteachersEDUCATIONLITERACYWEEKPhotocourtesyofHeatherOlmsteadPhotoDaliCarmichaelPhotocourtesyofAuroraCollegePhotocourtesyofBrentKaulbackPhotoElethaCurrenMrs.GroenhydeaGrade1teacheratHarryCamsellSchoolinHayRivercelebratesLiteracyWeekbysharingherloveofreadingwithrstandsecondgradestudentsduringstorytime.HelenBalanoffandRobyneLeblancdisplaytheirMinisterialLiteracyAwardsgiftedtochampionsofliteracyintheNWT.HeidiCummingleftandCameronSandyHeronlearnhowtoreadtheCanadianFoodGuidewithdietitianRobertaDowlinginFortSmith.DeninuSchoolfromFortResolutionwasawardedtheMinisterialLiteracyAwardintheyouthcategoryfortheirdedicationtorevivingtheChipewyanlanguageinandoutofschool.StudentsElethaCurranleftBenjaminKarstadandHeatherBurnsplayScrabbleattheEcoleSt.PatrickSchoolinYellowknifeduringLiteracyWeek.
