TuesdayNovember25201411Healthyfoodstaste-testedatInuvikscommunitykitchenByNATHALIEHEIBERG-HARRISONThegoaloftheInuvikCommunityKitchenissimple-togetpeoplecooking.ThepilotprojectwhichisfundedthroughtheGNWTAnti-PovertyFundisthebrainchildofEastThreeSecond-arySchoolsPatrickGale.AsfoodsteacherIvealwaysfeltthatoneoftheactivitiesinthecommunitythatwaslackingwassomewaytogetadultstodeveloppositiveattitudesabouttryingnewfoodsthatmightbehealthierhesaid.Ialsoliketheideaofdifferentpeoplecomingtogether.Twicepermonththeschoolopensitskitchendoorstocommunitymemberswhoarekeentocookshareamealandtakedisheshometotheirfamiliestobeenjoyedlaterintheweek.Nopriorcookingexperienceisnecessaryandadultsofallskilllevelsandbackgroundsarewelcome.Youcantjusttellpeopletoeathealth-ieriftheydonthavethedesireortheskillsettomakehealthyfoodsforthemselvesGalesaid.Theyneedtoknowwhattobuyandtheyneedideasofwhattocook.GalecitedaNorthAmericanstudythatshowedmorethan70percentoffoodsingrocerystoreswerenotconsideredhealthy.ThegoalofthemenusistochoosefoodsthatarehealthytoeataffordableinInuvikandsomewhatfamiliarbutexoticatthesametimetoexpandpeoplesinterests.Hesaidhisgoalwiththepilotprogramistoattractawidearrayofparticipantsfromteachersandgovernmentworkerstolow-incomefamiliesandsinglemoms.InadditionpastfoodsstudentsofEastThreeSecondarySchoolaregiventheop-portunitytoworkasprogramassistantssotheycanearnextraincomegainindus-tryexperienceandparticipateinpositivecommunityengagementGalesaid.SomeoftheproduceusedwasevengrownandharvestedbyGalesstudentsattheInuvikCommunityGreenhouse.DeirdreDimitroffaprogrampartici-pantandteacherattheschoolattendedforhersecondtimelastSaturday.Shesaidshelovesgettingthechancetotrytonewfoodsandcooktogetherinafullystockedandequippedkitchen.IliketocomeheretogetvarietyinwhatIeatshesaid.Whenyouliveinaremoteplaceitsdifficulttohavefoodthatisntalwaysthesame.AlexandraPulwickiaFrontiersFoun-dationvolunteerfromtheUniversityofCalgaryhasbeentoallfourweeksofthecommunitykitchenprogramandiseagertocontinue.Ireallyenjoycookingandlearningaboutnewfoodsandsharingthatexpe-riencewithothersshesaid.Youneedfoodtolivebutyoucanenjoyitatthesametime.Pulwickisaidherfirstexperiencewithacommunitykitchenwasatuniversitywheretheyrunasimilarprogram.Inadditiontothedeliciousfooditsagreatwaytomeetpeopleshesaid.AtthefirstthreeweeksoftheInuvikCommunityKitchenPulwickihelpedcookFrenchItalianandMiddleEasterncuisine.Shesharedtherecipeforoneofherfavou-riteMiddleEasterndishesshakshoukawithfriendsonFacebookandreplicateditathomesoshecouldshareitwithothers.Thesharinggoesbeyondthekitchenheretooshesaid.TheInuvikCommunityKitchenrunsthroughMarchandisfreeforthepublic.Galesaidheishopingtorenewfundingsothathecancontinuetoofferitthrough-out2015.ThekitchenisalsoacceptingmonetarydonationshalfofwhichgotocharitiesliketheInuvikFoodBankandtheotherhalftogroceries.ThenextcommunitykitchenwillrunonNov.30atEastThreeSecondarySchool.ThemenuwillfeatureEasternEuropeanrecipes.AlexandraPulwickimixesspicesfortheInuvikCommunityKitchensroganjoshdishwhichincludedlambvegetablesyogurtandtoastedspices.DeirdreDimitroffsetsdowntandoorichickenthenalIndiandishoftheafternoonbeforeparticipantsbeganfeastingonthefreemealtheyhelpedcookthemselves.ParticipantsinthelatestInuvikCommunityKitchenmealincludedfromlefttorightJoelGrangerSteveWagarPatrickGaleGemmaGaleLexieWinchesterDeirdreDimitroffMeganMcCafferySheenaAdamsRobinHaasAndrewHaasAlexandraPulwickiAnnaJohanssonandSarahHuet.Duringthethree-hourcommunitykitchenprogramlastSaturdayparticipantssplitintogroupstoprepareandcookavarietyofrecipestryallthedishesduringasharedmealcleanthekitchenandthensplitandtakehometheleftoverstoeatduringtheweek.ARTSCULTURECULINARYPhotosNathalieHeiberg-Harrison
