AboriginalSportsCirclehonoursvolunteersrolemodelsTuesdayNovember25201419SPORTSRECREATIONAWARDSByDALICARMICHAELWithlastsummersNorthAmericanIn-digenousGamesandconstantexcursionstocommunitiesacrosstheterritoryyear-rounditsbeenabusy2014fortheteamatAborigi-nalSportsCircleNWTASCNWT.Foroneeveningthemembersoftheor-ganizationtradedintheirtrainersfortheirbestdudsandtookabreakfromtheirrecre-ationalactivitiesfortheorganizationsannualcelebratorydinnerandawardsceremonyattheExplorerHotelonNov.21.Sixoutstandingindividualswereselectedaswinnersthisyearfortheircommitmenttovolunteeringwithintheircommunitiesandtheirpositionsasrolemodelsforfuturegenerations.AshleyGillisofFortSmithwasnamedcommunitybuilderoftheyearforhertire-lesseffortstoproviderecreationalactivitiestothetown.AnathletethroughoutherschooldaysGillisgraduatedfromtheUniversityofAlbertawithaBachelorsdegreeinrec-reationsportandtourism.Shesaidshewassurprisedandhonouredtowintheawardbuttrulyenjoyedthework.TheyouthneedsomethingtodoiftheresnothingforthemtodothentheyrejustgoingtogoandgetintroubleGillissaidinaninterviewwithTheJournal.IgrewupinSmithsoIknowhowharditiswhentheresnooutlet.Ijustwantedtohelpprovideasafeenvironment.ItwasntthatIsaidImgoingtoplanthiscommunityeventbecauseitwasjustsomethingthathappenedmorenat-urallyandjusthappenedtoturnintoacom-munityevent.ThroughouttheyearsGillishasdedicatedextensivehourstohercommunity.Shespenthersummersworkingatthetownsreccen-treandorganizednumeroustournamentsforherfavouritesportofvolleyballtobasketballandeverythinginbetween.OneyearsheevencoordinatedthetownsCanadaDayfestivi-tiesataskthatshesaidchallengedherandgaveherwonderfulexperienceintheeld.DuringuniversityGillistookhertalentsinternationallytravelingtoThailandforthreemonthstodoherpracticumwiththeUofAsPlayAroundtheWorldprogramwheresheworkedwithkidswithlimitedaccesstoor-ganizedplayandrecreation.InOctoberGillisacceptedajobwithMu-nicipalandCommunityAffairsasyouthpro-gramcoordinatorfortheDehchoregion.NowlivinginFortSimpsonshelooksforwardtobringingfunactivitiestokidsaroundtheareastartingwithaJumpABunchtourinDecember.RecreationasculturepreservationEveryyeartheASCNWTalsorecognizesindividualsandorganizationsthatuserecre-ationasameansofsharinglocalindigenouscultures.ThisyearFortMcPhersonsJoanneTetlichiwasgiventhecultureaward.Itwassoexcitingshesaid.IsaidIddoitonmyownIddoitformyselfandnottoberecognizedbutIwasglad.Tetlichioftentakesteensbetweentheagesof12and16outintothelandwheresheteachesthemhowtosetsnarescollecttraditionalmedicinesandworkwithwood.Idonteveninvitethemtheyinvitethem-selvesshesaidbutnotedsheisalwayshappytohavethemalong.Tetlichihasalsosharedhertalentsinternationally.IbeadedababysbeltforPopeJohnPaulwhenhewasvisitingshesaid.ImadeabeltforPrinceCharlesmydadJohnnyCharliegavethattohimmaybewhenIwas14.WhenIwas51IgavePrinceWilliamandKateapairofslip-persandIhadapictureofmydadgivinghisdadthestrapImadeandthenmeetingthem.Alsojoiningtheranksofthe2014ASCNWTwinnerswereFortProvidencesbadmintonacesChristinaandSpencerBonnetrougeforthesportawardandInuviksTimGordonforbestcoach.TheorganizationalsoawardedRCMPofcerCpl.CraigMatatallofYellow-knifeforhisoff-dutyvolunteerwork.PhotocourtesyofAboriginalSportsCircleAboriginalSportCircles2014awardwinners.FromleftAshleyGillisJoanneTetlichiSpencerandChristinaBonnetrougeCpl.CraigMatatallandTimGordon.
