NACCintheblackforthefirsttimeinyearsTravelingshowstoNWTcommunitieswillnotbeaxeddirector8TuesdayDecember92014ARTSCULTURENORTHERNARTHayRiverHeritageCentrepreparesforupcominggeneraloverhaulMuseumcelebratestheseasonwithcommunity-centredeventsexhibitsARTSCULTUREMUSEUMByDALICARMICHAELArtappreciatorsandculturecraversoftheNorthneednotfretthetravelingperfor-mancesandexhibitshostedbytheNorthernArtsandCulturalCentreNACCwillnotbecancelledanytimeinthenearfuture.TheannouncementcomesafterNACCsNov.30annualgeneralmeetingwheretheartsor-ganizationsaidithaspulledoffasurplusforthe2013seasonforthersttimeinseveralyears.Withareportedsurplusof50124in2013theNACChasmadegreatstrides.In2012beforeexecutiveandartisticdirectorMarieCoderrecameaboardtheartsgroupreporteditwasintheredwitha104940decit.Forthe2014seasonitisprojectedtomaintainasurplusof51425.ItwasabigyearintermsofchangesaidCoderre.Overthelasttwoyearstheorga-nizationhasworkedtoupdateandrevampitsmanyculture-basedfestivals.Thegroupalsoinvestedinbuildinganewwebsitewhichhaswoninternationalawardsforitssleekandinteractivedesign.PerformancesinthetheatrelobbynowhousepreshowsforalltheperformanceshostedinYellowknife.Oneofthebiggestriskstakenbythecen-treappearstohavebeenrewarding.InthepastyearCoderrehasmadetouringper-formancestothesmallercommunitiesabigprioritywithshowstravelingtoInuvikFortSmithandmanyplacesinbetween.ThecommunitiesarereallypleasedtohaveuscomeCoderresaid.Honestlythereviewsfromeachcommunityarealwaysreallygood.Theyarehappytohavediverseprogramsanditsnotalwayssomethingthattheyareusedto.WesendsurveysallthetimesoIkeeptrackofthat.Itsnotalwayslogisticallyeasyandsome-timesthenumberofbodiesllingtheseatsislowerthanCoderrewouldlikebutsherealizesthattheproblemisjustoneofthegrowingpainsNACCmustfaceinordertoexpanditsservices.ShesaidcommentsreportedinotherNorthernmediaindicatingthattravelingperformanceswouldbeaxedifattendancedidntincreaseweretakenoutofcontext.Ourchallengeisdenitelysometimesthecommunicationandpromotioninthosecom-munitiesshesaid.Wetryourbesttopromoteasmuchaspossiblebutitsalwaysgoodtopartnerwithlocalorganizationswhenwecan.Athomeinthecapitalcitythingsseemtobegoingevenbetter.TheseasonitselfinYellowknifesoldoutprettymuchallthetimesoitwasveryposi-tiveCoderresaid.ThreedecadesofNorthernartOnDec.13artloversfromacrosstheter-ritorywillgatherattheNACCtheatreforaneveningofnostalgiaandcelebrationatthecouncils30thanniversaryblack-tiegala.Therewillbeupto75to100peopleinvolvedfortheshowitselfCoderresaid.ThenweregoingtohaveawonderfuleveninginthelobbyandtheninthegymnasiumofSirJohnFranklinHighSchoolconnectedtoNACC.Weregoingtohavemusicsilentauctionanimationsetc.Soitsgoingtobeafullpackedevening.ByDALICARMICHAELCommunitymembersinHayRiverarepreparingtorevitalizetheHayRiverHeri-tageCentremuseumcurrentlyhousedintheoldHudsonsBayCompanybuilding.InaseriesofmeetingsinNovemberthemuseumsboardandresidentscametogethertodiscussthefutureoftherelic-savingspace.Whatweredoingiscomingupwithageneralplanthatwecantakeandmoveforwardwithlookingatopportunitiesforthecommunityforexpandingourmu-seumsaidBradMapeschairofthemu-seumboardandatowncouncillor.Wewanttomakesurethewholetownisrep-resentedbyit.Someideasthathavecomeoutofthemeetingsincludeopeningthemuseumyear-roundandcreatingmoreroomforrevolvingculturalactivitiesandexhibitswithinitswalls.Therewereseveralideasaboutmaybelookingatanewbuildingexpandingdevel-opingmoreofthelotshesaidofthevolun-teersvision.Weappreciatewhathasbeendonebyourpastmembersthathavebeenaroundthemuseumforyears.Werejusttryingtomoveforwardgettingourmuseumintoanotherstep.Thehopeistohaveageneralplanforthemuseumnalizedthismonthtobeabletoactquicklyontheupgrades.WerereallybeingproactivewevegotareallygoodgroupofpeoplethatarethereMapessaid.Themuseumreallyrelies100percentonvolunteeringtogetstuffdone.Wewanttogotothatnexthur-dleandgetintowherewecangetsomeofthesebiggerprojectsdonebycontractingsomeofitout.Mapessaidthetownisweighingthecostsandbenetsofseveraldifferentoptionsandheldthemeetingstosourceideasfromthelocalcrowd.Heexplainedhowproudthetownspeopleareoftheareaspast.Topromotethathistorytheywantittobedisplayedinawaythatisinclusivetothepeopleswhobuiltthecommunitywhilere-mainingdynamic.Wevegotamazinghistorywithtrappingandtransportationandwereallywanttoshowcaseitmoreonaregionalsidehesaid.Itsdenitelykeyforus.GearingupfortheholidayseasonWhilethefutureoftheHeritageCentreissortedoutthecommunitywillbebusyget-tingreadyforChristmaswiththemedeventsthroughoutthemonth.VolunteersarescouringthetowntondphotosofHayRiverChristmasespasttohanganddecoratethemuseumwithavintageare.OnSundaysthroughoutthemonthofDecem-berresidentsareinvitedtolookthroughtheimagestohelpgetthemintotheChristmasspiritwhilenibblingongoodiesandsippingonhotcocoaandtea.OnDec.4one-man-showJamieBastedostoppedbytosharethestoryofArcticEx-plorerVilhjalmurStefanssonandhisdeadlyexcursiontotheregionswestofParryArchi-pelagofrom1913to1918.AccordingtoMapesBastedosperfor-manceexemplifiesthedynamictypeofactivityheenvisionsforthemuseuminthefuture.PhotocourtesyofHayRiverHeritageCent
