WalktoTuktakesstepstocoverCanadaAnnualfitnesschallengetopcontenderin1-millioncompetitionTuesdayJanuary20201519SPORTSRECREATIONFITNESSByDALICARMICHAELWintertimeoutdoorenthusiastswhopar-ticipateintheNWTsannuallong-distancewalkingchallengemightjustndthemselvespartofanationalmovementsoondepend-ingonhowCanadavotes.TheWalktoTukorganizedbythetheNorthwestTerritoriesRecreationandParksAssociationNWTRPAhasbeennamedoneofthetopsixnalistsinthePlayExchangeanationalcompetitionseekingoutthetopt-nessactivitiesinthecountrywiththewin-nerreceivingacool1-millionprizefromthefederalgovernment.ClaimedtobetheNWTsbiggestphysicalactivityeventtheWalktoTukchallengesteamsofupto20peopletowalkatotalof1658kmadistanceequivalenttothatofthemightyMack-enzieRiverorthetrekfromFortProvidencetoTuktoyaktuk.Thisisitsfthyearrunning.AlongwithotheractivitiesfromacrossCanadatheWalktoTukwasshowcasedinaCBCspecialthatairedJan.9inwhichCBCpersonalityWabKinewchampionedtheeventtoanationalaudience.Itstartedoutasaprogramtomotivatepeopleinvolvedinourwalkingprogramtostayinvolvedintheprogramoverthewin-tertimesaidGeoffRayNWTRPAexecu-tivedirector.Fromtherewedecidedtoofferitouttoeveryoneandeveryyearitssortofexceededourwildestexpectationsandourgoals.Theresbeenjustincredibleenthusi-asmaroundtheprogram.Asitcontinuestogainnationalatten-tionatleast140teamsamountingto1600individualsaresigneduptoparticipateinthechallengethisyear.TeamshavefromJan.5toMar.2tocollectivelygothedistance.Anhourofwalkingqualiesas5kmcoveredforteamswith10membersorlessand4kmforteamswith11ormore.ShouldtheywinthecashprizetheNWTRPAhopestomakethechallengeanationwideevent.Ithinkthisisafairlyuniqueopportu-nitytobringanNWTprogramtotherestofCanadaRaysaid.ThatissomethingthatreallyresonateswithNorthernCanadiansandNWTresidentsandthatismeaningful.ObviouslypeoplearereallyinspiredbytheprogramandsharethatenthusiasmandourprogramwithCanadians.Apparentlytheselectteamofjudgesthatvettedover500applicationsandselectedtheWalktoTukasanalistthinksotoo.AttheendofthedaythePlayExchangeisaboutndingnewandexcitingwaystogetCanadiansmovingespeciallyduringthoseinfamouswintermonthsinthegreatwhiteNorth.AccordingtothePlayExchangewebsiteonethirdofallCanadianchildrenareover-weightorobeseandonaverageonly4.4percentofchildrengettherecommendedamountofphysicalactivityneeded.ThreeoutofveCanadiansovertheageof20aresaidtosufferfromachronicdiseaserelatedtotheirphysicalinactivityandunhealthyeatinghabitssuchastypeIIdiabetessomecancersandhypertension.Someofthosestatisticsareelevatedinre-moteNortherncommunitieswhereaccesstofreshhealthyfoodscanbelimitedbyalackofavailabilityandhighfoodprices.ThevotingperiodforthePlayExchangeranfromJan.9to16andthewinnerisexpectedtoberevealedbytheendofthemonth.UntilthentheparticipantsoftheWalktoTukwillbekeepingtheirslightlyfrozenngerscrossedundertheirwintergloves.ByJOHNLYNCHTheKindersleyKlippersjustkeeprollinginthe2014-15SaskatchewanJuniorHockeyLeagueSJHLseasonatanincrediblepacewithhelpfromteamcaptainShaunMacPhersonofFortSmithNWT.OvertheweekendtheteamswepttheFlinFlonBombers3-2Fridaybeforeknockingthemoffagain4-3inashootoutSaturday.Inthelastmonththeteamhasonlylostonecontest3-2inovertimetoWeyburnonJan.2andhaswoneightothergamesincludingthemostrecentwins.With67pointstheteamleadstheKramerdivisionandisinsecondplaceoverallbehindMelfortMustangswhichhas71pointsinthe12-teamleague.KindersleybeatMelfort3-2inashootoutonOct.11beforelosingtotheMus-tangs3-2onDec.22.TheteamswillmeetforthenaltimeonFeb.21.OnSaturdayMacPhersonLandonGrossandMarcDubeauwerethemarksmeninregulationFortSmithsMacPhersonbestdefencemaninSask.leagueYellowknifesDevinCaseoutwitholdinjuryuntiltheplayoffspastitmeansafourtosixweekrecoveryperiodsoIwontbebackuntiltheplayoffs.TheKlippersonlyhavethreegamesleftinthemonthofJanuaryincludingthisFridaywhentheyhostNipawinbeforeclosingoutthemonthwithatwo-gamehomestandonJan.30againstLaRongeandJan.31againstMelville.Followalltheleagueactiononwww.sjhl.ca.SPORTSRECREATIONHOCKEYtimebeforetheKlipperswontheshootout.Kindersleywasahead2-0aftertherstperiodand3-2after40minutes.IdontwanttotakeawaytoomuchfromthethreepreviouswinsLaRongeHumboldtEstevanwhoareinthebasementofleaguestandingsbutwhenyoubeatatopteamlikeFlinFlontwostraightthatssomethingcoachRockieZingersaid.Whatyousawouttherewasplayoffhockeyforthelast120minutes.InthethirdperiodSaturdaytheBomberstookcontrolbutZingerindicatedthesethingshappenwhentheopponentisstrong.WhenyougettworeallygoodteamsyouwillgetshiftsinmomentumZingersaid.Thatistobeexpected.MacPhersonwhosepowerplaymarkerwasahighshotfromthepointintherstperiodcameinforsomepraisefromthecoach.HeisthebestdefencemanintheleaguehandsdownZingersaid.Ihaveknownsincethebeginningthatheissomeoneyoucanleanonandyousawthatouttheretonight.Whathebringstotheteamnotalotofplayerscan.Formeitwaseasytomakehimcaptainthisyearknowingthekindofplayerhereallyis.MacPhersonsaidthetwowinsweregreatforthehockeyteam.ItisalwaysabonuswhenyoucanbeatateamlikeFlinFlonMacPhersonsaid.TheyhaveacoupleofnewguysintheirrostersoIknewtheyweregoingtobeatopopponentforus.UnfortunatelyforYellow
