22TuesdayFebruary1720156.8103inx6.3125inByMEAGANWOHLBERGSahtuyoutharestartinguptheirsnowmo-bilesandheadingoutonthelandthiswintertogetabefore-and-afterpicturethatwillil-lustratehowclimatechangeisimpactingthelandandtheirwayoflife.MembersoftheSahtuYouthNetworkaneworganizationcomposedofyouthfromcommunitiesacrosstheregionareintheprocessofconductingtheirownresearchlinkinghealthandclimatechangeadapta-tionthatinvolvesdoingeldworkandtalk-ingtoelders.ThoughthenetworkasawholeisworkingtogetherasauniteachcommunityiscarryingoutitsownbranchoftheresearchaccordingtoyouthnetworkmemberKristenKodakinofTu-litawhoisleadingaprojectinhercommunityalongwithresearchpartnerJoanneKrutko.JoanneandIaregoingtoourgrand-motherscabintorecordeverythingwhatusedtobeatrailwhatwashappeningbackintheday-abefore-and-afterkindofdealKodakinsaid.HeadingouttoOldFortPoint-aroundtwohoursbysnowmobilefromTulita-withcam-erastheteamhopestodocumentchangestotheecosystemandhowitaffectsourcabinsorusortheanimals-anythingspecictoclimatechangeKodakinsaid.Likethereusedtobeareallygoodtrailbutnowyoucantreallycrossitbecauseitsallbushedin.Thosendingswillthenbebroughttoelderstoincorporatetraditionalknowl-edgeintotheanalysistoseehowmuchofaroleclimatechangecouldbeplayinginthechanges.WeregoingtoberecordingeldersstoriesandstufflikethatKodakinsaidtoaskthemhowwasthelandbeforeandthenshowthemwhatwefoundandgettheirreactiontoitandwhattheythinkitsallabout.NetworkopeningdoorsforyouthTheSahtuYouthNetworkbeganformingearlylastyearinordertoensureyouthin-volvementinenvironmentalculturalandland-basedresearchintheregion.Justlastmonththenetworkmadeitsrstpresentationtotheresearchcommu-nityataregionalworkshopfeaturingscien-tistsandmonitorsfromanumberofagen-cies.Kodakinsaidbeingconsideredapeerattheeventwasamajormilestonefortheyouthintermsofboostingtheircondenceandknowledge.Itwassogoodjusthearingwhatev-erybodyhasbeenworkingonalltheseyears.Itwasmind-blowingKodakinsaid.Theywerereallysupportive.WegotalotofgoodfeedbackandcommentsanditwasreallysuccessfulandIwouldlovetodothatagain.KodakinwhowashiredlastyearasaninternattheSahtuRenewableResourcesBoardofcesaidherexperiencewiththeyouthnetworkhasopenedupdoorsforhereducationallythatareinspiringhertogofurther.AftercompletingenvironmentalmonitoringtraininglastyearintheregionsherecentlyappliedfortheEnvironmentandNaturalResourcesTechnologyProgramatAuroraCollege.ItstimeformethatIdidsomethingpositiveandproductiveformycommunityandmyyouthmembersandIwantthemtobeabletoseeandrealizethatthisgroupcanhelptheminmanywaysshesaidofthenetwork.IjustappliedforschoolandIwanttodothatsoIcanbenefitmy-selfeducation-wiseinmycommunityforwhenIcomebackandtellthemwhatIvebeenlearning.Thisgroupthiscouldbetheirentranceintothat.Thiscouldopentheireyes.SahtuyouthresearchimpactsofclimatechangeonlandlivelihoodthroughnewnetworkPhotoKristenKodakinENVIRONMENTCLIMATECHANGESahtuyouthtakepartinanenvironmentalmonitoringcourseatDrumLakein2014.
