TuesdayFebruary1720159NorthwestTerritoriesPowerCorporationScholarshipProgramTheNorthwestTerritoriesPowerCorporationisdedicatedtodevelopingaskilledcommittedandprofessionalnorthernworkforceandencouragesresidentstofurthertheireducationinordertodevelopasustainableworkforceintheNWT.NTPC.comscholarshipsThePowerCorporationoffersonepostsecondaryscholarshipineverycommunitythatweserveforastudentstudyinginaeldthatweemploy.ApplicationdeadlineisFebruary212015.ForeligibilitycriteriaandmoreinformationpleasevisitAurorastudentboardrepadvocatesforpeersByDALICARMICHAELWhenKarenLepine-McfeetersdecidedtoimmerseherselfinseveraldifferentlevelsofAuroraCollegesstudentgovernmentshewassurprisedtofindjusthowsupport-iveandwelcomingthecommunitywas.Uponsomeinvestigationshediscoveredawell-roundedbatchofmentalfinancialandculturalprogramstohelpstudentswithavarietyoftheirneedsbutfoundmanyofherpeerswerentawareofwhatisaccessibletothem.Inordertocreategreatertransparencyandhelpstudentstakeadvantageoftheprogrammingthefirst-yearTeacherEd-ucationProgramTEPstudenttookontheroleofstudentrepresentativeforthecollegesboardofgovernorsaswellasapositionasclassrepfortheThebachacampusstudentcouncil.Somefolkstheygetsocaughtupwithfamilylifeandstudentlifethattheydontreallygettolookandseewhatelseisthereandrealizetherearesupportsavailablebothattheschoollevelandthecommu-nitylevelshesaid.Thebusymomoftwoandpart-timeem-ployeeattheFortSmithrecreationcentrehasahistoryintherolebeforedecidingtopursuehereducationshewasemployedasasupportworkerintheVancouverschoolsystem.ComingfromthecityIwasconstantlylookingforresourcingjustbecauseoftheprogrammingIdidshesaid.ItotallymakeuseofeverythingandanythingIcanjustbecauseitwillhelpmedobetterandobviouslybeingnewinthecommu-nityyouwanttoknowwhatsavailable.AsofJanuaryLepine-Mcfeetersoffi-ciallyacceptedherpositionontheboardofgovernorswheresheisproudtoadvo-cateforstudentsspanningAurorasthreecampuses.ShewasnotallowedtodiscloseanycurrentnegotiationswhilespeakingtoTheJournalbutassuresstudentsvoicesarebeingheard.Iwantittobeameaningfulexperienceformyselfbutalsoameaningfulcontribu-tionforthestudentsshesaidofherworkwiththeboard.IntheirnextnewsletterweregoingtotalkaboutwhatthisroleissothatpeoplecangetinformationsostudentsknowwhatthispositioniswhoIamandwhatImherefor.Ifyouneedtoletscommunicate.Inhersecondroleasaclassrepshendsthediscussionsareverysimilartotheonesontheboardofgovernorsbutonamicrocampus-speciclevel.Wehavestudentswhoareallagesshesaid.Alotofpeoplearedealingwithbeingawayfromfamiliespeoplerealizingthatschoolisalotmoreworkthantheyoriginallymayhavethought.Shealsogetsquestionsaboutnancialis-suesresourcesforchildcareandprogramsthathelpwithqualityoflife.WhilesheexpectsthismonthsAuroraCollegeWeektobeanicebreakforstudentstogetoutandenjoythecommunityLepine-Mcfeetershopestohelpfacilitatesimilarpro-grammingonaregularbasis.Oneofthethingswedlovetoseeistobringinmonthlyfamilyeventsthatwecandobecauseanumberofourstudentsarepar-entsshesaid.Eveniftheyarentalotofthemarefeelinghomesick.AsLepine-McfeeterspreparesforhernextboardofgovernorsmeetinginYellowknifenextmonthshehopestohearfromthestu-dentbodysheserves.Wewantyoutobesuccessfulshesaid.Schoolisnewtoalotoffolkssoifyourendingitchallengingthefactthatyoureopenandwillingtotryandndextrahelpisallthebetterforyou.KarenLepine-McfeetersAuroraCollegesstudentrepresentativetotheboardofgovernorsandclassrepresentativeoftheTeacherEducationProgramsayssheisworkingtomakestudentsmoreawareofthesupportsystemsalreadyinplaceforthem.PhotoDaliCarmichaelEDUCATIONAURORACOLLEGEWEEK
