10TuesdayFebruary192013EducationAuroraCollegeWeek2013ByRENEFRANCOEURAuroraCollegesBoardofGovernorsislookingtose-curemorefederalfundingfortheAuroraResearchInstituteARItoboostnotonlytheinstitutescutting-edgeworkbutalsoitsreputation.TheARIwasahottopicfortheboardduringtheirmostrecentmeetinginYellowknifeattheendofJanuary.MuchofourfocuswasonresearchandwedliketogettothepositionwherewecanstartapplyingforSSHRCgrantsfortheARISydneyOSullivanchairpersonoftheboardtoldTheJournal.TheSocialSciencesandHumanitiesResearchCoun-cilofCanadaSSHRCisafederalresearchfundingagencyforpostsecondary-basedresearchandtraininginthehumanitiesandsocialsciences.Theagencyallocatedover330millioningrantsfel-lowshipsandscholarshipsduring2011-2012.SecuringfundsfromtheSSHRCwouldelevatetheca-pabilitiesandreputationoftheARIOSullivansaid.Itwouldputusinapo-sitionofaccess.TheARIisbecomingincreasinglyac-tiveandthiswouldhelpfur-therhigh-qualityresearchshesaid.IthinkAuroraCollegehasbeenviewedasyourbasiccommunitycol-legeandtheresearcharmhasntbeenasprominentinthenationalpubliceyeasitshouldbe.Thiswouldraisethatpresence.Auroracouldbeinapo-sitiontostartapplyingforthefundingassoonasthisfallOSullivannoted.Butitwillbeatleastayearortwobeforethereisanyconcreteoutcome.WereintheprocessofputtingpoliciestogethertomeettheSSHRCsquali-cationsOSullivansaid.TobeeligibletoapplyforfundingAuroraCollegemustdemonstrateithasaccept-ablepoliciesgoverningthein-tegrityofresearchincludinghumanetreatmentofanimalsethicaldealingswithhumanresearchsubjectsultimatedisseminationownershipofintellectualpropertyrespon-sibilityoftheadministrationintegrityandaccountabilityofallpartiesandacademicfreedomshenoted.Anumberofpolicieshavealreadybeendevelopedandapprovedbytheboardbutuntilallhavebeenapprovedtheywillremaincondential.Wecouldpartnerwithanotheruniversityandapplycreatingmoreuniversitynet-workswhichisalsoonouragendaorwecouldjusttakethelead.WedontknowrightnowthefocusisongettingustotheapplicationstageOSullivansaid.Thereareseveralad-ditionalresearchfundingsourcestheschoolplanstoseekoutinthefutureaswellincludingtheNaturalSciencesandEngineeringResearchCouncilNSERCandCanadianInstitutesofHealthResearchCIHR.AllofthemhaverequirementssimilartoSSHRCforinsti-tutionalpoliciesgoverningethicalresearch.Anotheritemontheboardsagendaistheresurrectionoftheresearchadvisorycoun-cilanine-personstandingcommitteeprovidingtheboardwithadviceonanan-nualresearchagendafortheARIandmonitoringARIsprogress.ThecouncilwouldalsolookoverapplicationsfortheARIsresearchfel-lowshipprogram.Thecouncilwillconsistofboardmembersandalsofourmembersfromthepublicthreewithbackgroundsinvariousscienceeldsandonewithtraditionalknowledge.TheboardingeneralisinthemidstofreshapingitselfOSullivansaid.Thereareanumberoffairlynewmembersthatareeagerandenergeticshenoted.Wereembarkingonanewstrategicplanandthatwillmakeabigdifferenceintheprioritiesthecollegewillfol-low.Wewillbeseekinginputfromstaffcertainlyandthepublicatlargeaswell.OSullivansaidtheboardscurrentstrategicplanrunsuntiltheendofthisyear.ARIpriorityforAurorasboardofgovernorsPhotoReneFrancoeurByRENEFRANCOEURKariWilliamsisastudentinthetwo-yearbusinessad-ministrationprogramatAu-roraCollegeinYellowknife.Shessettoreceiveherdi-plomathisyearandiscurrentlylookingintointernshipsandadistanceprogramtoobtainherdegreethroughAthabascaUniversitybasedinAlberta.Itsnotanidealoptionthe25year-oldtoldTheJournal.ShedprefertocontinuecoursesinaclassroomsettingathomeinYellowknifebutthecollegenolongeroffersthird-yearcoursesforabusinessde-greeprogram.WilliamsvicepresidentoftheBusinessAdministrationStudentAssociationandherfellowclassmatesbeganape-titioninNovembertobringthethird-yearoptionback.Theysentout85letterseachattachedwith35signatures.ItssuchabigdealtohavehighereducationavailableintheNorthsowedonthavetokeepmovingsomewhereelseWilliamssaid.Formy-selfwetalkedaboutmovingtoEdmontonorLethbridgeforschoolbutitsjustnotfeasiblewithayoungchild.TheletterpointsoutthatstudentslikeWilliamswhowanttocontinuetheireduca-tionmustrelocateandtransfertonishtheirdegreewhichissometimesnanciallyandorlogisticallyimpossible.WilliamsandherclassmateswouldliketoseethebusinessprogramrisetothelevelofthenursingoneatAurorasNorthSlavecampuswherestudentscanobtaintheirfullBachelorofSciencewithoutleavingYellowknife.Itmayturnouttobeanat-tainablegoalaftersomeposi-tivemovementonthecollegefronttowardrevivingthethirdyeardistanceprogramWil-liamsnoted.Theresanongoingdialoguehappening.Theresameet-ingbetweencampusheadslaternextweektodiscussthisspecicissue.RightnowitsoatingintheadministrativeareaofAuroraandtheyretalkingaboutittryingtogetitunderway...Imhopefulshesaid.AccordingtoWilliamsmanyofthestudentscurrentlyintherstyearbusinessadministra-tionprogramarerightoutofhighschool.IthinkthatsamazingtoseestudentsfromYellowknifewillingtostayintheNorthandgettheireducationandthatssomethingweshouldntignore.Sofartheresponsestothepetitionoutsidecampushavealsobeenpositive.MLABobBromleygotaholdofuslastweekandgaveusencouragement.TheissuewasbroughtupintheLegis-lativeAssemblylastweektooandeveryonewascommittedtoseeingsomethinghappen.Meanwhilethebusinessdiplomaprogramcontinuestogrowwithonlyoneclass-roomavailableforstudentsinbothrstandsecondyearsoftheprogram.Thatbeingsaidtightaccom-modationswontgetinthewayofthepotentialthirdyearpro-gramWilliamshasalreadyguredouthowtosqueezeitin.ItdbeintheeveningsMon-daytoThursdaysfrom700to1000p.m.Itsdoable.Theyvedoneitbefore.BusinessstudentspetitionforthirdyearprogramEducationAuroraCollegeWeek2013SydneyOSullivanchairpersonofAuroraCollegesBoardofGovernorssaysboostingtheAuroraResearchInstitutewithmorefederalfundingisafocusfortheboard.
