inFortChipewyanplusangeroverwhatwasseenasthecreationofatoxicwastelandwiththemassivetail-ingsponds.Industryhasbeenworkinghardtochangeallthatbuttoomuchofitremainstrue.Thatstorylinereso-natedaroundtheworldandgavebirthtoablockbustermoviein2009abouttheplightofblueskinnedyelloweyedandquiteattractivenativesofanotherworldandtheirghtagainstapowerfulandgreedycorporation.Followingthattheembarrassingstateofenvironmen-talmonitoringbythefederalandAl-bertagovernmentswasexposed.Theapproachhasbeendeveloprstandworryaboutconsequenceslater.ItremainstobeseenifconcernsoftheAmericanprotestersgaintractionamongthegeneralCanadianpopula-tion.Itcouldbethecasethatbitumenfromtheoilsandsisrestrictedasanexportbothduetoitsgrowinglackofpopularitythankstothedirtyoillabelthatseemstobestickingandbecausetheindustryislandlockedwithnoreadyaccesstomarkets.Adominoeffectcouldbethelossofpopu-larityoftheHarperConservativesandtheirreplacementinthenextelection.HarperspoliciesandapproachcloselyfollowthoseofPremierMikeHarriswhoseCommonSenseRevolutionswepthimintopowerinOntarioin1995withprom-isesoflowertaxationsmallergovernmentandpro-businesspoliciestocreatejobs.SoundfamiliarThemostseriouscaseofwatercontami-nationinCanadianhistorythefatalE.colioutbreakinWalkertonOntariowaslargelyblamedontheHarrispoliciesinthecourtofpublicopinion.Sevenpeoplediedand2300becameillafterWalkertonswatersupplybecamecontaminatedwithmanurespreadonafarmnearthetown.OnlyoneofseveralndingsofthejudicialreportthatfollowedpointedtogovernmentcutbacksasthecausebutthezealoftheHarrisCon-servativestogetridofgovernmentregu-lationsandregulatorsandtheirperceivedpenchantforthrowingthebabyoutwiththebathwaterresultedinthembeingseenbythepublicasthevillain.Theyweresweptoutofofceaftereightyearsinpower.WillsomethingsimilarhappentotheHarperCon-servativesiftheyareseentohaveblownenvironmentalprotectionTheoilsandsindustryislikethegoosethatlaysthegoldeneggsintheJackandtheBeanstocktale.Itneedstobeproperlycaredforandcarefullymanaged.Thatshouldhappeninaplannedandcoordinatedwayovertimeatpace.Maintainingthehealthofpeopleintheregionshouldbeparamountandimpactstotheenvironmentmustbedealtwithinadiscerningandopenway.Thatiswhatthepublicwants.Governmentsareresponsibleforthat.Theywillreceivetheblameastheyshouldifthingsgobadly.Itwouldbeasaddayifthecurrentun-managedapproachthatallowsuncheckedgrowthwithlittlegovernmentmonitoringandnocontrolbackredanddamagedthefuturepotentialoftheindustry.Thatjustmightbewhatishappening.PhotoMeaganWohlbergThelatestNWTresidentstobeawardedtheprestigiousQueensDiamondJubileemedalsfourpeoplefromFortSmithwererecognizedduringamedalpresentationonSaturdayafternoonattheNorthernLifeMuseumandCulturalCentre.FromlefteducatorAnnPisch-ingerRichardDaitchandMary-PatShortonbehalfoftheirdaughterSarahDaitchindigenousactivistFrancoisPauletteandMasterCpl.PaulCurrieallreceivedmedalspresentedbyWesternArcticMPDennisBevingtonandThebachaMLAMichaelMiltenberger.
