EducationAgriculture22TuesdayMay142013FORTSMITHAMBULANCENEEDSVOLUNTEERSContactustolearnmoreaboutbecominganEmergencyMedicalResponderAmbulanceDriverWeProvidetheTrainingNOPREVIOUSEXPERIENCENECESSARYFortSmithVolunteerEMSP.O.Box147FortSmithNTX0E0P0PH872-8400fortsmithambulanceyahoo.caVisitfortsmith.catocheckoutourbrochureandtodownloadanapplicationNorthernFarmTrainingschoolalreadybearingfruitByRENEFRANCOEURStudentsinthenewfarm-ingschoolinHayRiverarenotwastinganytimeinsharingwhattheyrelearningaboutlocalfoodsecurityandthepowerofgardening.ThatisexactlywhatJackieMilnepresidentofthenon-profitTerritorialFarmersAssociationTFAandtheschoolsmaininstructorsaidshewashopingfor.TheNorthernFarmTrain-ingInstitutehelditsrstwork-shoponseedselectionandcarefromApr.26-28followedbythesecondworkshopplantingandgardenprepfromMay3-5.ThetrailblazingschoolisgearedtowardsNorthernerswhoareseriousaboutgrow-ingtheirownfoodandof-fersvaluablelessonsthroughmonthlyworkshopsinfoodharvestingandstoragegar-denmaintenanceandmarket-ingandevenanintroductiontosmallanimalhusbandry.Theclassroomisatcapacitywith15studentsfromcom-munitiesacrosstheNWTMilnesaid.TwooftheparticipantsarefromFortGoodHopeandwenthomeduringthefourdaysinbetweenwork-shopstohostinformationalgardeningsessionsoftheirown.TheyorganizeditandtaughtwhattheydlearnedintheseedcoursewithjustthosefourdayswhentheywentbacktoFortGoodHope.Soseetheyrealreadyteachingotherpeo-pleintheircommunitiesMilnesaid.Thisisexactlywhatwewant.Everyoneintheseworkshopsispassion-ateandwantstoinspireoth-ers.Theyareawarethisisntjustabouttheindividualbutaboutchanginghowweeatandliveasawholecommunity.TheworkshopswhichrunforoneweekendpermonthuntilOctoberareinhighde-mandwithover40peopleal-readyonthewaitinglistfornextyearandmorenamesrollinginonaregularbasisMilnesaid.WithadequatefundingMilneplanstoexpandtheworkshopsforthe2014season.TheGNWTconfirmeditscontributionof40000totheinstituteattheendofJanuarythestartupportionofthetotal350000Milneoriginallyrequested.Todate140000hasbeenallocatedtotheschoolbutMilnesaidsheneedsabout50000moretocoverallthestudentairfares.WecouldhavejusthadtheworkshopsopentothoseintheSouthSlaveregionanditwouldntbesoexpensivebuttheideaistomentorpeoplefromalltheNWTregionsandthenacoupleyearsfromnowwellhavesatelliteteachingcentressopeopleinletssayNormanWellscangettogetherandhaveworkshopsandtherewillbeper-manentresourcepeoplethere.MilnesaiditstimefortheNorthtogetsmartandstartyingpeoplenotfoodintotheremotecommunities.Everyonehasconcernsaboutfoodwhetherthatbehealthcostsaccessvarietyselectionandtaste...Theresmanyreasonstowanttotakemorechargeofourfoodsupplyshesaid.Studentshavesofargainedvaluablehands-onexperienceinMilnesowngreenhouseplantingseedslearningwhathastobeplantedaheadoftimeinsideandwhyhowtoknowwhentotransplantandtodosoeffectivelyandhowtodeveloporganicsoilfertility.WhatiftherototillerbreaksdownYouhavetoknowwhattodoMilnesaid.Theclassalsodedicatedanentiredaytothediscussionofrainwaterharvesting.Lotsofpeopleareontrucked-indeliveredwaterandtheycantaffordtowatergardenssowelookedatdif-ferentwaysofstoringrainwatergettingwaterfromtheriverhowtousenon-electricpumpsMilnesaid.Wemadeself-wateringbucketsoutofre-cycledvegallonpails.Thatswhatitsaboutrealpracticalstuff.Andthatmakesthestu-dentssogung-ho.Theyllallhavegardensforsure.Theparticipantsrangeinagefrom14to60Milnesaidandincludemenandwomen.Wehaveone14year-oldAboriginalboywhowantstobuildhisowngreenhouse...An-otherwomanisfromthePhil-lipinesandeveryonebringstheirownuniqueperspectivestothetableshesaid.ThenextworkshopsetforJune7-9willexplorevariousgardenconstructiondesignsandfeatureatourofamarketgardeninHayRiver.Springcomesinmanywaysandthisisspringforafoodtrans-formationintheNWTMilnesaid.Oneyoungstudenttoldmehewasdoingthisbecauseitwasaboutchangingtheworld.PhotosKimRapatiInstructorJackieMilnebottomrightinstructsfarmschoolstudentsontransplanting.VivianeEdgi-ManuelofFortGoodHopetriesherhandattransplanting.
