23TuesdayMay142013TheNorthernJournalcongratulatesFortChipewyanCampusGraduates2013Bravoforyourhardworkandoutstandingachievements.SachsHarbournursewinsawardofexcellenceByRENEFRANCOEURASachsHarbourwomanisoneofthreenurseswhoreceivedtheannualawardofexcellenceinnursingfromHealthCanadasFirstNationsandInuitHealthBranchinOt-tawalastweek.MarieMcPhersonthenurseinchargeattheSachsHarbourHealthCentrewasnominatedfortheawardbythecommunitywhichshehasbeenworkinginforthepast10years.IfeelveryhumbledMcPhersonsaid.Justbeingnominatedbymycommunitywasenoughforme.Itsthegreatpeopleherethatmakethisplacespecial...Ineverex-pectedtowin.Shewasofciallyhandedacerticateofexcellenceplusa2500bursarytobeputtowardscareerdevelopmenttrainingataceremonyinOt-tawalastMonday.Theceremonywassowon-derfulandverytouchingandsomanyimportantpeoplewerethere-thedeputyministerofhealththeheadoftheCNACanadianNursesAssocia-tion.ImretiringnextyearandIthoughtwowwhatawaytogooutMcPhersonsaid.ThetwootherwinnersareGailNahmabinwhohasworkedasacommunityhealthnursefortheAamjiwnaangFirstNationinOntariosince1995andJoanBelangerthenurseinchargeattheBearskinLakeFirstNationNursingSta-tionalsoinOntario.NursesprovideacrucialservicedeliveringdirecthealthcareservicesinFirstNationsandInuitcommu-nitiesfederalHealthMin-isterLeonaAglukkaqsaidinapressrelease.IamhonouredtorecognizeJoanBelangerGailNahmabinandMarieMcPhersonforimprovingthehealthofAboriginalcommunities.Advancedknowledgeprac-ticalexperienceandun-waveringcompassioninthenursingeldcontributegreatlytotheoverallhealthofFirstNationsandInuit.Thereleasewentontodetailhownursesinruralandremotecommunitiesplayanimpor-tantroleastheonlyfrontlineprovidersinareaswheredoc-torsarenotalwaysavailable.Thiscomeswithtremen-dousresponsibilityandtheyoftenencounteruniqueanddif-cultchallengesindeliveringhealthcarethereleasestated.TohonourthisdemandingundertakingtheAwardofEx-cellenceinNursingwascre-atedin2003acknowledgingthehardworkdevotionandcommitmentofthreenomi-natednursesinFirstNationsandInuitcommunities.McPhersonoriginallyfromNovaScotiahasbeenanursesince1970andmovedtotheNorthin1997.Throughtheyearsshemadeitaprioritytocontinuetoadvancehereducationandknowledgethroughsucheffortsasattend-ingasixmonthoutpostnurs-ingprogramwhileworkinginYellowknife.Shealsohasex-tensiveexperienceincoronaryandintensivecarefromvari-ouspositionsacrossthecoun-tryaswellasinternationally.AccordingtotheresidentsofSachsHarbourMcPhersonisknownforgoingaboveandbeyondasshedeliversexcellentnursingcaretohercommunity.Shesextremelyknowl-edgeablepersonablefunnyanddeeplycommittedtonursingintheNorthAn-dreaDonovanacommunityhealthnurseinSachsHar-bourtoldTheJournal.Imsohappyforher...Iknowsheisverytouched.PhotocourtesyofMarieMcPhersonMarieMcPhersonthenurseinchargeatSachsHarbourwasrecognizedalongwithtwoothersfromacrossCanada.HealthWellnessNursing
