19TuesdayJuly22013SportsRecreationSummerCampByRENEFRANCOEURTheTaigaAdventurecampsareabouttokickoffanothersummerofcampresdryshteambuildingskillsandallaroundopenairfun-onlythisyearparticipantsinthegirls-onlyoutdoorsprogramwontbetheonlyonespaddlingNorthernlakesandrivers.TheNorthernYouthLead-ershipSocietyNYLSwhichrunsTaigaisnowalsoofferingco-edcanoetripsforthersttimebeginningthisAugust.Itsparkedfromthere-questswevehadfrompar-entsaboutincludingboys...andNorthernYouthwantstoincreaseitspresencegetintomoreyear-roundprogram-mingasweveseenwithourrstTaigawintercampthisyear.WewanttoprovideforallyouthintheNWTJennyCrawfordTaigasexecutivedirectorsaid.ThecanoetripsscheduledforAug.5-9and12-16willtakeabout10boysandgirlsaged13-17alongthebreath-takingIngrahamTrail.Theyllbepaddlingabout15kmadayCrawfordsaid.Theylldoalotofpaddlingtechniquesandrescueactivi-tiestherstday.AccordingtotripleaderCatherineMalletthegroupwillstartateitherReidLakeorPowderPointabayonPreludeLakeandnishinthecityattheYellowknifeBridge.Theyllbeportagingalongtherouteandreallybuildingonteamskillslikemakingcampgatheringwoodhelp-ingwithfoodMalletsaid.AccordingtoCrawfordtheoverallobjectiveofthecanoetripsliketheTaigacampsistodevelopleader-shipskillsincreaseself-es-teemandpolishgoal-settingmethodology.Thatbeingsaidhavingfunisoneofthemostimpor-tantthingsCrawfordaddedwithalaugh.Andtheydohavealotoffun.MeanwhileTaigasrstsummergirlscampof2013launchesFridayjust30min-utesoutsideofFortMcPher-sononthePeelRiver.Activitiesincludeshingmakingdryshnaturehikesboatridescraftsandswim-mingsaidBellaHubermancampleaderandprogrammer.Itswhatwecallacul-turalandshingcampforthegirlsanditsreallyspe-cialbecausetheygettoworkwithGwichinelderMaryEssieSnowshoeshesaid.Theymakedryshwithherandshesjustafascinatingstoryteller.Northernyouthgearupforfirstco-edcampsTaigaAdventurecampalsopreparesforfirstdeltacanoetripByRENEFRANCOEURNearly60JuniorCanadianRangersfromtheNorth-westTerritoriesjoinedoth-ersfromNunavutYukonandAtlinBCtowhitewaterraftzip-linetrapandcanoeamongotheractivitiesinanEnhancedTrainingSes-sionBasicthatwrappedupSaturday.Theweek-longcampwasbasedinWhitehorseandpulledabout190Rangersfrom36communitiesacrosstheNorthintoaseriesofadrenaline-rushingeventstoenhanceandtesttheirout-doortrainingskillsaswellasfosterleadershipqualities.Thegoalistoinstillselfcondenceintheyouth.WechallengetheminheightactivitiesandwaterrescueeventssaidSharonLowcommandingofcerfortheNorthernJuniorRangers.Safetyisalsoahugecom-ponent.ThepercentageofdeathsintheNorthfromdrowningisreallyquitehighsoformewaterrescueandselfrescuearebigonestofocuson.Duringthecamptheyouthaged12-18werealsoexposedtoopportunitiesnotavailableintheirhomecom-munitiesmanyofwhichareisolated.Forsomegoingtocampmeansseeingtreesforthersttimeormeetingotheryoungpeopleofdifferentbackgrounds.Forotherscampmarksanopportu-nitytopracticetheirsecondlanguageortolearnanewskillstatedanewsreleaseonthecamp.AdditionallythetrainingsessionfurtheremphasizestraditionalandRangerskillsworkedonthroughouttheyearsuchasmarksmanship.Otheractivitiesincludewoodsmanshiparcheryswiftwaterrescuerappellingandmonkidoanoutdoorob-staclecourse.ImenjoyingitbecauseIlikecampbeingoutsidebeingwithotherpeoplethatsortofthingBrandonThomofFortProvidencetoldTheJournallastTuesday.Myfavouriteistheskeetshooting.ImnotthatgoodbutIdidget19outof25.NextImexcitedtogohorsebackridingtheydidnthavethatlastyear.Thom16hasbeenin-volvedwiththeRangersfortwoyearsandwasselectedthisyeartotakepartinanewleadershipcomponentoftheWhitehorsecamp.Wedoalotofteambuild-ingworkandevenmoredrillslikeatattentionandstuff.ImtheleaderofourgroupandwhenwegobackhomeIllcontinuethatleadershipusewhatIlearnThomsaid.Lowsaidtheleadershippor-tionisnewtotheprogram.JuniorRangerstrainoutdoorsinWhitehorseOtherfuneventsincludeaBushWomanCompetitionwherethegirlscompeteforprizesinanumberofonthelandtestssuchasremaking.Taigaisalsoofferingagirls-onlyCanoetotheSeacampfromJuly17-27wherepaddlersembarkonajourneyfromInu-vikuptheEastChanneloftheMackenzietoitsmouthontheBeaufortSea.ThisisourrstcanoetripintheDeltaHubermansaid.Wecrossoverfromthetreelinetothetundraandseeingthatcontrastisjustastarkbreath-takingthingtosee...TherouteisrichwithhistoricalsiteslikeanoldabandonedInuitsettlementwherehopefullywehavesome-onefromENREnvironmentandNaturalResourcesmeetupwithusandtellusmoreaboutit.AccordingtoHubermanthevoyageisabout160km.Itmayseemintimidatingbutwewillbepickedupattheendandboatedbackshesaid.Wellsingintheboatsitlljustbeablast.Formoreinformationortoregisterforoneofthecampsvisitwww.taigacamp.com.PhotosJayaBastedoTaigagirlsareallsmilespaddlingalongtheMackenzieRiver.Taigacampsstrivetofosterleadershipandteambuildingskills.Thegoalistoinstillselfcondenceintheyouth.Wechallengetheminheightactivi-tiesandwaterrescueevents.SharonLowJuniorRangerCommandingOfcerEacheveningwerein-troducingtheseleadersintoleadershipactivitiesanddis-cussionandtheyreactuallyactingincampcounsellortyperolesthisweekwiththeyoungeronesanditsbeenverysuccessfulshesaid.Rangersforthesessionwerechosenbyadultcom-mitteemembersandt
