23TuesdayJuly22013FortChipewyanBicentennialMuseumHoursMonday-Friday900a.m.to500p.m.Saturday-Sunday100p.m.to500p.m.FreeAdmissionCallustoday780.697.3844Congratulationsathabascadeltacommunityschool2013GraduatesMtisLocal125wouldliketocongratulateallgraduatesofAthabascaDeltaCommunitySchoolOurcommunitygrowswithyoursuccessArtsCultureHomecomingByDIANASMITHOver1000visitorsoodedintoHayRiverontheweek-endtocelebrateHomecoming2013aweekendpackedwitheventstowelcomeresidentswhohavesincemovedaway.FlagsinorangeyellowandredlinedthestreetstobrightenupthetownwiththeHomecomingCommit-teessignaturecoloursandabuzzspreadthroughtownascampervansparadedinandparkedinoldfriendsyards.TheweekendwasmeanttocelebratethepeoplewholivedinandbuiltHayRiverandwhohavemovedaway.Manyofthemreturnedtogreetoldfriendsandcreatenewmemories.Therewasmuchforvisitorstododuringtheirstayanongoinghospitalityroompro-videdrefreshmentsthrough-outtheweekendameetandgreeteventreunitedoldfriendsanexhibitionsoftballgamelettheoldstarathletesperformfortheirfriendsonceagainashfrybroughtev-eryonetogetheronSaturdayeveningachurchservicegaveeveryoneachancetoworshiptogetherandadanceonSundaynightcappedoffthefun.SheilaCookwhositsonthecommitteesaidshewasabitnervousatthestartoftheweekendafterthemanymonthsofpreparation.Ithinkitsgonereallywellthoughshesaid.Peoplehavebeensayingthewholeschedulecouldfallapartandtheydstillbehappyjustvisitingtheiroldfriends.Over1000peopleregis-teredfortheeventmanyofthematthelastminute.Kan-deeFroesechairofthecom-mitteesaidthatsincetheywereonlyexpectingabout700visitorstherewasalotoflast-minutepreparation.Wevebeengettingcom-plementsnon-stopabouthowwonderfuleverythingisshesaid.SueRobertswasbornandraisedinHayRiverandhasbeenlivinginOntariosince1981.Shecomesbackeveryyearforavisitbuthasnotseensomeofheroldfriendsinalongtime.Thishasbeenthemostawesomeweekendofmyre-centmemoryshesaid.ShehadbeenspeakingwithanoldfriendwhotoldherItwaswortheverysecondittooktogethere.DorisCaudronlivedinHayRiverfrom1969-1982andnowlivesinJoussardnearSlaveLake.ShesaidHugeturnoutforHayRiverHomecomingtheclosenessofHayRiveriswhatkeepshercomingback.ThepeoplearesofriendlyjustliketheywerewhenIlivedhereshesaid.WhenIcomebackeverybodystilltreatsmelikefamily.IamfamilywhenImhere.Itslikecominghome.BrendaDickcameupwithherhusbandWally.TheyleftHayRiverin1981aswellandlivedinAlbertafollowedbyOntario.Shesaidsheappreci-atedtheeventsbutwasalsotakingtimealonetogetintouchwithheroldstompinggrounds.Forhertheweek-endwasarollercoasterofemotions-seeingoldfriendsandsayinggoodbyetosomeaswell.AccordingtoFroesethemeetandgreeteventwasmostlyjustpeoplendingeachotherandhuggingandaminutelaterbeingscoopedupbyanotherfriendfollowedbyanother.Itwasoverwhelmingshesaid.DenitelywentthroughafewKleenex.ThecommitteecouldntsaywhethertheydbeorganizinganotherHomecomingeventinthefuture.Itwillbeuptothenextgen-erationtocarryonwiththisFroesesaid.Itsalotofworkbuttoseepeoplereconnectisworthit.PhotosDianaSmithVisitorspaytheirrespectstothepeoplewhohavelivedinHayRiverandpassedawayataspecialmemorialwall.BonnieandRoyCrowthershowofftheir1957FordFairlane500attheKinglandShowandShine.ChildrenplayduringhomecomingwhileacoastguardvesselblessestheeetofshipsontheGreatSlaveLake.
