takingholdbyworkingwithyouth.Todootherwisewouldbefoolish.Unfortunatelycollaborationisneededinthattoobutitdoesnothappen.TheNWTgovernmentdepartmentsofJusticeHealthandSocialServicesEducationandparticularlyMunicipalandCommunityAffairsresponsibleforcommunitypro-grammingrecreationandsportshouldallbeworkingtogether.Thereshouldbeaninterdepartmentalapproachtoinvolvingyouthinpositivelifestylesandactivitieswithcontributionsinplanningprogrammingandfundingfromeachdif-ferentdepartmentalperspective.Littleifanyofthatiseverdone.TherewillalmostcertainlybeafurorovertheclosingoftheNatsejeeKehTreatmentCentre.Therewillalsobeanattempttofulllsomeoftherecom-mendationsoftheHealingVoicesreportandimplementnewmeansofaddictioncounsellingsomeofwhichwillpredict-ablystruggleovertime.Wefearthatinthemelethereportsappealforyouthprogrammingwillbeforgotten.IntheelectionslastweekinFortProvi-denceandFortGoodHopebothnewchiefsemphasizedtheimportanceofworkingwithyouth.JoachimBonnetrougeoftheDehGahGotieFirstNationandGregLaboucanofKashoGotinebothsaidininterviewswithTheJournalthatprogrammingforyouthwouldbeaprior-ity.Thereisnodoubtamajorityofcom-munityleaderswhofeelthiswaythattheneedisparamountandaneffectiveeffortislackingyetseniorgovernmentsdonotseemtonotice.Somanyoftheproblemsweexperi-enceinsocietytodaymanyofwhichhavenancialaswellassocialcostscouldbepreventedifmoreeffortwereputintopreventionbyworkingwithorsettingupprogramsforyouth.Problemsinadulthoodoftenhaverootsinpoorde-velopmentalexperiencesinearlyandmidchildhood.Thesemanifestinadultlife.Weseemunabletobewiseinourapproachtoyouthprogrammingandenrichment.Wemustbemoreinnova-tiveandsubstantiveinourapproach-inparticularinthewayopportunitiesforlearningandgrowtharemadeavail-able.TherearereasonssofewNorth-ernersespeciallyAboriginalkidsdonotgraduatefromhighschoolmuchlessproceedtohighereducation.Thatneedstobexed.Dowewantamorerobustandeffec-tiveeconomicsystemfewerpeopleinjailfewersocialproblemshealthiercitizensandamoremeaningfulandful-llingsocietyoverallWecouldhave.Morethoughtneedstobeputintothis-alotmore.Andagreatdealofaction.PhotocourtesyofCamZimmerParksstaffanumberofSahturesidentseldersandDehchoandKaskarepresentativesrevealanewplaqueintheNtsihchohNationalParkReservededicatedtothe10eldersfromTulitaandNormanWellswhocontributedtothenamingofthepark.NtsihchohlocatedintheSouthNahanniwatershedistheShhtagotinelanguagedescriptionofthemountainonthereservereferringtoitsuniqueshapewhichissharpandpointedontoplikeaporcupinequill.
