HealthWellnessHealthCare9TuesdayJuly302013StantonHealthAuthorityappointsnewCEOByRENEFRANCOEURAnewfaceissettoheadtheStantonTerritorialHealthAu-thoritySTHAthisSeptember.BrendaFitzgeraldwillbetakingthereinsfromKayLewisasSTHAsCEO.ImveryexcitedaboutthisopportunityandmovingtotheNorthFitzgeraldtoldTheJournal.Ihaveover30yearsinhealthcareandIjustlovetheeldwereintheconnectionsanddifferenceswecanmake.FitzgeraldoriginallyfromNewfoundlandwasmostre-centlythepresidentandCEOatSt.PaulsHospitalinSaska-toonSask.herhomeforthepastdecade.Shesteppeddownfromthistitlein2008.Herlat-estprojectistheconstructioncommissioningandlicensingofa174-suiteindependentandassistedlivingfacility.Shealsostartedherownconsultingcompanyin2009andoversawtheworkofa100-suitelong-termcarefacilityfrom2010-2012inpartnershipwiththeCatholicHealthMin-istryofSaskatchewanandtheprovincialministryofHealth.Herfavouritesuccesshow-evercamefromherrstjobonNewfoundlandsBurinpeninsulawhenshewasafreshgraduate.Webuiltabrandnewhospi-taltherethatbroughtspecialitylevelservicestothepeninsulalikepsychologyobstetricsandgynecologyshesaid.Peoplesaidyoullneverbeabletodothisyouwontbeabletorecruitenoughprofessionals....ButIhadthepleasureofrecruitinganawesometeam.Thehospitalisstillthereandstillprovidesagreatlevelofcareandthatwasallstartedin1987.FitzgeraldgraduatedwithaBachelorofCommercefromMemorialUniversityinNew-foundlandandearnedaMas-tersofHealthSciencefromtheUniversityofToronto.Shewentontoholdseveralhealthser-vicesadministrationandCEOpositionsandalsoservedastheassistantdeputyministerofHealthwiththegovernmentofNewfoundlandandLabrador.InthispositionsheoversawthetransferofcommunitybasedcomponentsoftheprovincialdepartmentofSocialServicestoregionalhealthandcommu-nityservicesboards.ItwasFitzgeraldsbroadex-perienceandoverwhelminglypositivereferencesthathelpedmaketheauthoritysdecisioneasiersaidJoeHandleyST-HAspublicadministrator.Shesbeenaseniorhospi-taladministratorforanum-berofyearsshesworkedingovernmentandhelpedSas-katchewanshealthdepartmentrestructuretheirsystemintosomethingmoreintegratedwhichiswhatweretryingtodoHandleysaid.Wehadothergoodcandidatestoobutsheoutrankedtheotherswithherexperience.AsStantonstartstolookatmajorreconstructionoverthenextfewyearsFitzger-aldwillbeakeyplayerinhelpingthatprocessrolloutsmoothlyHandleysaid.Imlookingforwardtobuildingonthestrengthsal-readyestablishedatStantonandwhattheyarecurrentlyputtinginplaceforthefutureintermsofthecapitalplan-ningprocessandcontinuetoidentifyopportunitiesforimprovementandreallyberesponsibleforthepeopleweserveFitzgeraldsaid.NWTSPCAceleberatesfull-timeshelteropeningByJACKDANYLCHUKTheNWTSPCAcuttheribbonSaturdaytoopentheterritorysonlyshelterwithfull-timepaidstafftoacho-rusofdogsbarkingandhowl-ingwithexcitement.Fromastandingstartthreeyearsagothesocietyraisedmorethanhalfamil-liondollarsincashandin-kindcontributionsboughtlandinYellowknifesEnglebusinessdistrictandbuilttheshelterthatopenedlastOctober.Itsaremarkableachieve-mentMayorMarkHeycksaidbeforehehelpedSPCApresidentNicoleSpencerof-ciallyopentheshelterformorethan100volunteersandsupporterswhotouredthebuilding.Theshelterhascapacityfor30indoordogs40out-sidekennelsand10catcondosagroomingareaisolationroomforsickani-malsanexaminationroomforvisitingveterinariansCapitaloffersrewardsforlitterpickersByJACKDANYLCHUKYellowknifehasanotherbroominitsclosetofstrat-egiestoputitsbestfacefor-wardwhentouristsroamthecitypublic-spiritedcitizenswithaloathingforlitter.Bylawofficersandcitycouncillorswillrewardany-onetheyseepickinguptrashordogscatwitha5couponthatcanbeusedatcityfa-cilitiessuchaspayingali-braryneoraswimatRuthInchPool.ThisrewardsgoodSa-maritansandboostscivicprideitmakesthecitybeau-tifulforresidentsandvisi-torsMayorMarkHeycksaidwhenannouncingtheprogramlastweek.Itsalsoniceformunicipalenforce-menttobeabletoreactinapositivewayusuallytheyreafterpeoplefordoingsome-thingwrong.Thecouponprogrampicksupfromspringclean-upsbynot-for-protgroupsthatclearstreetstrailsandneighbourhoodsofthewin-tersaccumulationoflitter.Thecitysadopt-a-streetprogramhas100membersscouring45kilometersofstreetsand14.5hectaresofgreenspace.Iveheardbackfromvis-itorshowcleantheythinkthecitylooksHeycksaid.Street-scapingand237trashbinsanincreaseof70overthelastveyearshavealsoimprovedpub-licattitudesandthecitysappearance.WhenyoutakearockyditchandaddgrassandtreesbenchesandgarbagereceptaclesitslesslikelythatpeoplewillcarelesslythrowawaylitterandtrashHeycksaid.meetingroomkitchenandashowerforvolunteers.SpencersaidAvivaPhotoJackDanylchukPoliticsMunicipalPoliticsMunicipalCommunityFoundationstartedtheballrollingthreeyearsagobyraising300000.Sincethenthousandsofhourshavegoneintotheprojectshesaid.Itwillcontinuetogrowwithcom-munitysupport.Werestilllookingfordonationsfor17dogkennels.Feelfreetogiveus10000.Theshelterservestheen-tireNorthwestTerritoriesasakeywaystationinarescueprogramthattakesdogsfromremotecommunitiestonewhomesinthesouth.Runningtheshelterisadynamicandcomplexunder-takingSpencersaid.Theshelterhasafull-timemanagerandapart-timeassistantsupportedbymorethan100volunteers.SinceitopenedlastOcto-berithasprovidedatem-poraryhomefor350dogsand40cats.FlankedbydirectorsoftheNWTSPCAMayorMarkHeyckandNicoleSpencerSPCApresidentcuttheribbontoof-ciallyopenthenewkennelinYellowknifesEnglebusinessdistrict.
