11TuesdayNovember192013theland2014CPAWS-NWTLovetheLandCalendarNarrativesforWinningPhotosJanuary-FromAboveYellowknifeBaybyRileyVeldhuizenIshotthisaerialphotoofaskierandthetracksleftbehindbyotherswhileyinginahelicopterduringtheFrostbite45a45-kmfootorskienduranceeventthattakesplaceinandaroundYellow-knifeeverywinter.Youhavetoloveaplaceanditspeoplewhoforfunwilltravel45kmacrossthelandandfrozenwateronsnowshoesorskisandusuallyaroundthefrigidtemperaturesof-40C.February-IceFishingonDefeatLakebyRileyVeldhuizenAtwo-hourskidoorideoutofYellowknifewespentthedayshingunderafewfeetoficeonDefeatLake.IlovethislandforitsvastnessandabundanceofshWecaughtvenorthernpikeonthisdaysittinghuddledaroundtheholeswithouriceshingrodstakingturnstositinthepropaneheatedshelterandcomingoutunderthewarmthofthewinterssunin-30C.March-PressureRidgePowderNorthArmGreatSlaveLakebyKevinKlingbeilOnawarmspringdayakiteskierharnessesthepowerofthewindwitha14square-metrekite.TotheleftinthephotoapressureridgemadeofhugeicechunksisanaturaloccurrenceonGreatSlaveLakethathappensastheiceshiftsandpushesedgesofcracksupward.Thisspectacularformationwaslocatedapproximately18kmfromYellowknifeandwasaccessiblebykiteskiingsnowmobileorsometimesevenbytruck.FormeitwasabitunnervinggettingrightclosebesideittotakethephotoasthecracksreachdownintothedepthsoftheBigLake.April-PeeringintothePastAlexandraFallsbyRichardMcIntoshWhilevisitingTwinFallsTerritorialParkIwasgreatlyimpressedbythenaturalenvironmentandtheinterpretivewalk.ThesignagesharesastoryofthetraditionalDenetradingroutealongtheHayRiver.Thestoryisdeliveredfromthedifferentperspectivesofmembersofthegroup.AlthoughtodayweoftenneglecttopayourrespecttonaturebothLouiseandAlexandraFallsdemandourrespectoutofsheernecessityofsafety.Itishardtolookatthefallsandnotthinkaboutwhatitwouldhavebeenliketoencounterthemwhiletravelingdownriverbycanoe.May-HikersDescendDodoCanyonbyMalcolmCampbellTheNWTsectionoftheCanolTrailisover350kmlongandfollowstherouteoriginallycon-structedduringWWIItobuildandserviceanoilpipelinefromNormanWellstoWhitehorse.Itisanarduoushikewithdifcultriverfjordsbutitisverymuchworththeeffort.Insomeplacestheconstructioncrewsworkingtoawartimeschedulewentrightdowntherivervalleys-achoicethataffordsCanolhikersspectacularviews.OurtripstartedatDevilsPassandwereachedtheMack-enzieRiveraftertrekkingforninedays.Itwasmileaftermileofstarkandbeautifulscenerywithmanychancestoseewildlifeespeciallycaribouandbear.DodoCanyonwhichbeginswithin50milesofthenorthshoreoftheMackenzieRiverisoneofthemostchallengingandbeautifulsections.June-LateNightWalkSqualusLakebyBrianKinzieIwastwoweeksintomyrstcanoetripwhichturnedouttobeanupstreamupwindjourneywithaninterminable55portages.ItwasalsomyrsttimeNorthof60andIwasenthralledbythelongsunsetsandlateevenings.ThisphotowastakenatourcamponSqualusLakeat1030p.m.afteranotherlongdayofpaddlingandformeitrepresentsthebeautyandsolitudeoftheNorth-inthreeweeksofpaddlingweneverencounteredanotherperson.July-RaftingtheMightyNahannibyMarthaDrakeThisisEmilySylviaHannahandMarytheyareobviouslyveryhappytobeoutinthewilder-nessoftheSouthNahanniRiveronaraftingtrip.Thesceneryisniceandquietwiththeexceptionoftheroaroftheriverandtheyoungpeoplesoccasionallaughter.BeinginthewildernesswithoutamenitiesdidnotseemtobotherthegirlsastheyweresoenthralledbythevastbeautyofVirginiaFallsandthecanyonsweraftedthrough.Itwasatripofalifetimeforthesegirlsandtheywillfor-evertreasuretheirexperiencesofraftingthemightySouthNahanniRiver.August-TeamDirtyFaceTibbittLakebyTinaLocke-SetterAsachildIgrewupspendingmysummersatthelakeinandonthewaterandknewthatthiswassomethingthatIwantedtosharewithmychildren.Our5year-oldtwinshavebeencampingandcanoeingsincetheyweretoddlersandlovebeingoutdoors.Thisphotowastakenafterspend-ingtheweekendcampingonanislandonTibbittLakeNWTwherewespentourtimecatchingwaterbugsandmakingmudsoup.September-MmmCharDelightUlukhaktokbyPeggyJayThisphotowastakenduringtheBillyJossOpenGolfTournamentwherethereisalwaysanabun-danceofArcticcharwhethercaughtbynetsorshingrods.FreshcharDeliciousWhatabonusforvisitorsHoweverforresidentscharisanimportantpartoftheirdietandfoodsecurity.Harvestingisatraditionaswellasanecessity.AlloverthecommunitycharcanbeseenhangingtodryintothewonderfulNortherndelicacyofbif.ComeseeforyourselfOctober-MooseSkinBoatBoundForTultaBegdeKeeleRiverbyTeeLimPembinaInstituteItwasanincredibleprivilegetowitnessthismooseskinboatupcloseandinactionontheBe-gdeKeeleRiverasitmadeitswaytoTultainAugust2013.InthisphotoRickyAndrewandfellowcommunitymemberspaddletheboattowardTulta.TheShhtagotnMountainDenehavebuiltmooseskinboatsformanygenerationsandagroupofdedicatedcommunitymembersworkedtirelesslyonthisboatforweeksthersttomakethisjourneyinovertwodecades.ThismooseskinboatandallthatitrepresentsrenewedmyappreciationforthestrengthofDenecultureandDenerelationshipswiththeland.November-WhiteFoxJamboreeFunSachsHarbourbyTanisSimpsonDuringtheWhiteFoxJamboreeinMay2013residentsofSachsHarbourenjoyedafun-lleddayplayingtraditionalgames.Theeventswerehostedonthesnow-coveredbeachofBanksIsl
