18TuesdayNovember192013YellowknifesChallengeCupcelebratesclassicrivalryByMARIACHURCHStandspackedwithparentsandstudentsontheedgeoftheirseatssportingeitherblueandyelloworgreenandwhitecanbeoverwhelmingforrsttimehockeyplayersattheChallengeCupinYel-lowknifebutitsoneofthemostexcitinggamesoftheyearsaysonecoach.Yellowknifeshighschoolsandlong-timehockeyrivalsEcoleSt.PatrickHighSchoolandSirJohnFranklinwentheadtoheadinYellowknifelastweekattheannualWadeHamerChallengeCupboysandgirlsgames.ThisyearsgameswerenailbitersforplayerscoachesandfanswithbothwonbyonlyonegoalsaidRobHartacoachforboththeboysandgirlsSt.Patsteams.ItwasdenitelyIthinkthemostexcitingChallengeCupIveeverseenforbothgamesputtogether.Itwasjusttossedwithexcitementtherehesaid.ThegirlsteamswerethefirsttobattleitoutintheEdJeskearena.SirJohnsFalconswerefavouredforthewinafterlastyearsgameendedinaclearvic-torybuttheSt.PatsIrishwerenotabouttogodownwithoutafightthisyearHartsaid.ThestagewassetafterSt.PatsbrandnewgoalieTamaraTsettafacedoffagainstSt.Johnsassistantcaptainonabreakawayandmanagedtosnatchthepuckfrommidairhesaid.Itjustkindofsetthetoneitwasntgoingtobethateasyforthem.Firstsavewasabigglovesaveonaripperofashot-thatwasaprettygoodwaytostartthegameHartsaid.IntheendSirJohnkeptuppressureontheSt.Patsgirlsandwonthegame3-2.TheboyswerenextupintherinkanditwasanyonesgameHartsaid.Backandfortheachteamgottheupperhandasthegoalsclimbed.St.Patsmanagedtotieitupwithonlyaminuteleftsendingplayintoovertimewheretheyscoredagaintowinthegame6-5.Allthesemomentsofex-citement-savesfromgoaliesdefenceplays-itsawholejumbleofawesomenessHartsaid.Imjustextremelyproudofalltheplayersonbothsidesforhowtheyplayed.Ithinkitsjustashiningexampleofwhatthatdayssupposedtobetwoteamsoffriendsthatforonedayarerivalsandaregoingheadtoheadandabso-lutelybattlingitoutontheiceandyetstayingwithinlimitsofsportsmanshiphesaid.Theyreplayinggoodcleanhardpassionatehockeyandgivingthe1000orsopeoplethatarewatch-ing80minutesofbeautifulhockeytowatch.TheChallengeCupwhichhasbeenplayedeveryyearbythetwoschoolssince1985wrapsupthehighschoolhockeyseasoninYellowknife.ThreeinducteesannouncedforNWTSportHallofFamerecognitionInducteesfortheNWTSportHallofFamehavebeenannouncedandwillsoonjointheranksoftheterritorysgreatathletesbuildersandteams.VicMercrediFatherMouchetandthe1964YellowknifeJuniorMerchantshavebeenselectedforthisyearsrecognitioneventthatkicksoffSportNorthsSportForumonNov.22atthePrinceofWalesHeritageCentreinYellowknife.TheNWTSportHallofFamewasstartedlastyearbytheSportNorthFederationtoshowcaseNWTssporthe-roesandinspireyouthtosetgoalsandlivehealthyactivelifestyles.CoacheswantedforIndigenousgamesTheAboriginalSportsCircleisteamingupwiththeNWTVolleyballAssociationandtheNWTSoccerAssociationtondheadcoachesandassistantcoachesfortheterritorysteamscompetinginthe2014NorthAmericanIndigenousGamesinReginaSask.nextyear.CandidatesarerequiredtohaveeithertheirAc-tiveStartortheirCommunityCoachChildcertica-tionbewillingtoobtainacriminalrecordcheckandcompleteathree-houronlineRespectInSportcourse.Applicantsareaskedtoapplyonlineathttpwww.nwt-kicks.cacoaching-applications.TheNorthAmericanIndigenousGameswilltakeplaceonJuly20-272014.EightstudentsselectedforSportNorthscholarshipsEightstudentswereawardedwithscholarshipsof1500fromtheSportNorthFederationlastweekfortheiracademicexcellencededicationtosportandvolun-teercommitment.Allstudentswhoreceivedthe2013scholarshipsareinsport-relatedstudiesintheNWT.RecipientsincludeTylerComeauMattCraigAlexan-draLetzingKentNilsonSpencerRiversLauraRossandAleaStockton.AlyssaRossrecievedtheScottMc-AdamScholarshipalsovaluedat1500.SportsRecreationHockeyPhotoscourtesyofSt.PatricksHighSchoolFlankedbyFalconsSt.PatsassistantcaptainSarahHarttakesashotatSirJohnsnet.TheIrishandFalconsbattleitoutforpossessionofthepuckduringtheboysgame.SPORTSBRIEFSDoyouwantaPerfectWeddingCascadeGraphicscanhelp.Talktousaboutinvitationsdecorationspersonalizedaccessoriesandotheruniquetouches.CascadeGraphics.207McDougalRd.FortSmithNT867-872-3000ex.20
