13TuesdayJune102014ByNATHALIEHEIBERG-HARRISONGrade9studentsatEastThreeSecondarySchoolinInuvikweretreatedtoashocklastweekwhentheydiscoveredfourclassmateswereinvolvedinaviolentdrunkdrivingcollision.Thecrashanditsensu-ingemergencyresponsewasstagedaspartofthePARTYProgramaone-dayworkshopthataimstopre-ventalcoholandrisk-relatedtraumainyouth.Wecreatetheworldwechoosetoliveinonedeci-sionatatimesaidAdamFortierabylawofcerwiththeTownofInuvik.Itsaboutlearningfromrealpeopleandtheirveryrealexperience.Theprogrambeganwithamockfuneralforaclass-matewhichwasinterruptedwhenemergencyserviceswerecalledtothesceneofatwo-carcollision.Studentswereledoutsidewhereonestudentactingasadrunkdriverwasarrestedonthescene.ForthenexthourtheInuvikvolunteerredepartmentandBlueIceparamedicsworkedtosavethreestudentactorsinjuredinthemockcrash.TwowererushedtotheInu-vikRegionalHospitalwhilethethirdadummywastakenawayinahearsetothemorgue.TheGrade9studentsfol-lowedtheambulancetothehospitalwheretheyvisitedtheemergencyroomtherehabilitationclinicandthemorguetondoutrsthandtheconsequencesofdrink-inganddriving.Ifyouthinkyourebul-letproofyourenotun-dertakerMikeCarrutherstoldthevisitingstudents.Inadditiontolearn-ingaboutthedangersofdrinkinganddrivingthePARTYProgramalsoin-cludedworkshopsonboatandsnowmobilesafetytheimportanceofwearingaseatbeltanddangersofdis-tracteddriving.AliMcConnellexecutivedi-rectoroftheInuvikYouthCentrehelpedorganizetheeventandsaidtheprogramwasadirectresultofstudentsatEastThreeaskingformoreeducationonthedangersofdrinkinganddriving.IsdrinkingandrecklessbehaviouraprobleminInu-vikYesshesaid.OneofthethingsthatthePARTYProgramreallystressesisthatyouhavethechoiceandthataccidentsarepreventable.ConnorCampbellaGrade12whoactedasadriverinthemockcollisionsaiddrinkinganddriv-ingis100percentaprobleminInuvikandhopestheprogrammakesstudentsthinktwicebe-foredrivingwhileimpaired.Youshouldntdrinkanddrivehesaid.ThePARTYProgramisaninitiativeoftheInuvikInteragencyCommitteesyouthsub-committee.Morethan30youthtookpartinthePARTYprogramthisyearwhichwasfundedbythedepartmentofMunici-palandCommunityAffairs.InuvikstudentsactoutlessononimpaireddrivingHealthWellnessImpairedDrivingUndertakerMikeCarruthersexplainshisjobtostudentsvisitingthemorgue.Ifyouthinkyourebulletproofyourenothetoldthem.JulieSpindleraphysiotherapystudentattheInuvikRe-gionalHospitalshowsPaulOConnorrst-handwhatitwouldbeliketohaveaspinalcordinjuryastheresultofanaccident.TheInuvikvolunteerreghterdepartmenttransportsthecollisionsfatalitytoahearsewaitingoutsidetheMidnightSunRecreationComplex.NurseJamieYoungexplainstoGrade9studentsvisitingtheemergencyroomwhatinju-riesyoucouldsustainfollowingadrunkdrivingcollision.Fireghtersplacecribbingunderneaththevehicletosecureitbeforeworkingtoex-tractthecrashvictims.Morethan30youthwereinvolvedinthePARTYProgramwhichtookplaceattheMid-nightSunRecreationComplexandtheInuvikRegionalHospital.PhotosNathalieHeiberg-Harrison
