22TuesdayJune102014ByMARIACHURCHTheentireGrade10classatAthabascaDeltaCommunitySchoolinFortChipewyanre-centlybecameparents.Theirbabiesaredozensoftinyuffypeepingchicks.ForseveralweeksthehighschoolsciencestudentshavebeenincubatingchickeneggsaspartofanexperientiallearningbiologyprojectledbyteacherKaraMundy.Theeggs30intotalwerebroughtinfromahatcheryinEdmontonandsetupinanincubationsystemrightintheclassroom.Forweeksthestudentsensuredtheeggsreceivedtherightamountofheatbyturningthemoverthreetovetimesaday.When26chickswerebornonaSundaytwoweeksagoMundysaidshewassurprisedthereweresomanypeeps.IknewweweredoingeverythingrightbutIwashonestlyverysurprisedshesaidwithalaugh.Sincetheyhatchedthestudentshavebeencaringforthechickswithdailyfeedingscleaningsandlotsofloveandattention.Mundysaidtheprojectteachesthestudentsaboutlifecyclesbutitsalsobeenagoodlessoninleadership.Theclassinvitedyoungergradestocomecheckouttheirpeepingbabiesandwereabletosharewhattheylearnedthroughtheexperiment.ItwasanopportunityfortheGrade10studentstobeleadersbecausethelittlekidswerereallyexcitedtoseethebabychickensMundysaid.Theyweresoproudbecauseitwassomethingtoshowthattheyworkedon.Theytookownershipofthoseeggsandthenthebabychicks.TheGrade10classwillcontinuetotakecareoftheirchargesintheclassroomforthenextweekbuttheyoungfowlwillsoonbeheadingouttogoodhomesinthecommunity.Mundysaidtherearestillafewchicksyetunspokenforandencouragedthoseinter-estedtocontacttheschoolat780697-3933.ByDALICARMICHAELOnemanisattemptingtocanoe2700kmfromFortMcMurraytoInuvikbeforeditchinghisboatandhikinganother800kmtoDawsonYukon.TheonlyhitchinhisplanBeforecomingtoCanadaabouttwomonthsagohedneverpaddledacanoebefore.GermanysMarcoMarder26isarecentuniversitygrad-uatewhodecidedtosetoutonagreattreklookingforadventurebeforeenteringhiscareer.HespokewithTheJournalabouthistrav-elswhileportagingthroughFortSmithonJune5.Iwasstudyingforthelastveandahalfyearsalmostallmybuddieshavespenthalfayearabroadordidanex-changesomewhereMardersaid.WhenIcametotheendofmystudiesInoticedthatIdneverdonesuchathingandtheproblemiswhenyoustartyourworkinglifeyouneverhavetimetogethalfayearoff.Irealizeditsmylastchancetodosomethingbig.Mardertooktotheinter-neteventuallydecidinguponCanadaashisdestination.IalwayslikedNorth-erncountriesmorethanthesouthernonesandCanadaespeciallyIlikedbecauseofthewidedistancesthehugenetofwaterwaysthepossi-bilitytobereallyaloneoutthereMardersaid.PlanningandpreparationForoverhalfayearMarderplannedhisexcur-sionfromhishomeinGer-manymappingroutesandguringoutjusthowlongitwouldtakehimtocompletethejourney.BeforecomingtoCan-adaMardergotintouchwithCalgary-basedcoupleDarinandJenniferZandeewhohappentobecanoeexperts.UponcrossingtheoceanMarderstayedwiththeZandeesforsixweekswhileDarintheformerpresidentofFortMcMur-rayscanoeclubhelpedhimlearnhowtocanoeandprepforthelengthyexcur-siondehydratinghundredsoffruitsandstockinguponothernecessarysupplies.TheZandeesalsohelpedMarderconnectwithpeoplealonghisroutewhowouldholdontopackagesofextrasuppliesandprovidetemporaryrelieffromtheelements.MardernallysetoutonhisjourneyfromFortMcMurrayonMay23withtheZandeesandateamofpaddlersjoininghimonthewaterfortherstday.OnthewaterSofarMardersroutehastakenhimfromFortMcMur-raytoLakeAthabascawhereheranintohisrstobstaclewindsthatlefthimpinnedagainstthesouthshoreofthelake.IrealizedHeyyouwillnotsurvivethenightifyoukeepsittinginthatboatsoIstartedgoingupstreamagainandlookingforacampsiteMardersaid.Heexplainedhowhefoughtagainstthestormforaboutthreehoursbeforendingabankthatwasntcoveredinmudwherehewaitedouttheweatherinhisone-persontent.AfterthestormfinallypassedhepaddleddowntheSlaveRivertowardsGreatSlaveLake.UponreachingFortFitzgeraldonJune3MarderwasforcedtoportagewithhisgeartoFortSmithtakingseveraldaysandtwotripstotransporteverything.WhileintownhestoredsuppliesattheParksCan-adaofcesleptatthelocalWhoopingCranebedandbreakfaststockeduponfoodandhadclothingrepaired.Mostlyhespenthistimeenjoyingcompanyinthecommunityevenstoppinginfordinnerwithsomeofthelocals.ItslikeIexpectedittobeMardersaidofhistrip.Lifeisprettyhardouttherebuttherearealsoafewverynicemomentslikewhenyouarewakingupanditsanicesunnymorning.OnaverageMarderiscoveringabout60kmadaycanoeingapproximately10hoursbeforesettingupcampatnight.FromFortSmithheplanstopaddleGreatSlaveLaketotheMackenzieRivereventuallyreachingInuvikbeforeturninginhiscanoeforapairofhikingshoesandfollowingtheDempsterHigh-waytoDawsonCity.Mardersaidheplanston-ishhisadventuresbytheendofAugustbutifhehastimemaydrivefromDawsonCitytoCalgarytoexploremoreoftheCanadianWestbeforede-partingforGermanyonOct.6.TofollowMardersadven-tureslikehisFacebookpageMarcos3500kmCanadaAd-ventureathttpswww.face-book.com3500kmCanadaFortChipstudentshatchchicksforbiologyclassNaturenoviceon3500-kmtripbycanoefootTravellerlandedinFortSmithJune3portagedpastrapidsEducationBiologyPhotocourtesyofMarcoMarderPhotosKaraMundySportRecreationCanoeingGrade10studentsatAthabascaDeltaCommunityschoolinFortChipewyanproudlyholdchickstheyhatchedforbiologyclass.Thestudentshatchedatotalof26chicks
