2TuesdayOctober142014SPORTSRECREATIONAWARDSNEWSBRIEFSArsonunderinvestigationinInuvikInuvikRCMParelookingforinformationonasuspi-ciousvehiclefirethatoccurredonthemorningofOct.9atTununukPlace.AccordingtoRCMPanattemptwasmadetolightasecondandthirdvehicleonfirebutbothattemptswereunsuccessful.Anarsonin-vestigationisnowunderwaybytheOfficeoftheFireMarshalandtheRCMP.InuvikRCMPinvestigatesuddendeathonDempsterHighwayInuvikRCMPandtheChiefCoroneroftheNorthwestTer-ritoriesareinvestigatingthesuddendeathofamalethatoccurredontheDempsterHighwayonthemorningofOct.10.RCMPandEmergencyMedicalServicesrespondedtoareportofamaleinmedicaldistressontheroadwayapproxi-mately40kmoutsideofInuvik.ThemalewastransportedtoInuvikTerritorialHospitalwherehewaspronounceddeceased.ThecauseofdeathisunderinvestigationbutRCMPsaythereisnoevidencetobelievethereisapublicsafetyconcern.RCMPwarnpublicofregisteredsexoffenderlivinginYellowknifeRCMPissuedawarninglastweekthatTravisCasawaypreviouslyconvictedforsexualassaultandsexualas-saultwithaweaponiscurrentlylivinginYellowknife.CasawayisconsideredaviolentsexualoffenderwhotheRCMPsaysposesariskofsignicantharmtothepublic.CasawayisanAboriginalmaleaged27weigh-ing91kgand180cmtall.FortSmithcleansupatNWTRecreationandParksawardsYellowknifeandUlukhaktokrecprogramsalsorecognizedatannualawardsceremonyByDALICARMICHAELTwooutstandingwomenfromFortSmithwereamongseveralleadersinsportrecognizedlastweekbytheNWTRecreationandParksAssociationNWTRPAfortheircontributionstotheircommunitiesandrecreationintheterritory.AtaceremonyheldinYel-lowknifeonOct.8JunevaGreenwasgiventheorgani-zationsprestigiousHonoraryLifetimeMembershipAwardforherdecadesofvolunteerservicewhileGenevieveCtacceptedtheInnovationAwardonbehalfoftheFortSmithPaddlingClubsannualSlaveRiverPaddlefestastapleontheNWTsummercalendar.CelebratingalifetimeofachievementJunevawasgiventheHon-oraryLifetimeMembershipAwardprimarilyforhervol-unteerworkinrecreationforFortSmithsaidTimVanDamwhositsontheNWTRPAboardfortheSouthSlave.Therearecurrentlysixmem-bersinthateliteclubandsheisnowtheseventh.VanDamsaidtherewasnocontestfortheawardassoonasthepanelofNWTRPAjudgessawGreensresumetheyimmediatelyrecognizedherasthewinner.FortSmithvolunteerPatti-KayHamiltonstartedwork-ingwithGreenoverthreede-cadesagoandhelpedpreparehernominationfortheaward.Shesalwaysjustbeenwonderfuland...Idontre-memberhereversayingnoifsomebodyneededavolun-teerHamiltonsaid.AccordingtoHamiltonGreenalwayshadahandinvolunteerworkthrough-outthecommunitygarner-ingherFortSmithsCitizenoftheYearAwardfor2014butisbestknownforherrolewiththeFortSmithSkiClub.Inthe70sGreeninitiatedtheJackrabbitsprogramforyoungcross-countryskiersandoverthenext30yearsintroducedgenerationsofyoungathletestothesport.Shealsoinvestedinherowntrainingsoshecouldcoacholderathletesallthewaytoterritorialnationalandinter-nationallevelsofcompetition.FromthetimeshewasyoungGreensaidshelivedoftherecreationvalueoftheSlaveRiverandtohelpprotectitasarecreationalvenue.RatherthanjustwatchingpeoplesayOhyouknowthisisawater-waypeopleusetheywentoutandgotlotsofpeopletouseit.Thefestivalhasbeenrun-ningforaboutsevenyearsandwhileVanDamsaiditcouldhavebeenrecognizedmuchearlierconcentratedeffortstomaketheeventinclusiveanactivelifeandhervolun-teerworkwassimplyanex-tensionofthat.ItsjustsomethingthatIenjoydoingGreensaid.Itsawaytobeinvolvedinyourcom-munityanditssomethingthatkeepsyouyoungparticularlybeinginvolvedwithchildren.TheawardwaspresentedjustintimeforGreensbigmovesouthassheandherhusbandJimdecidedtoleavetheircommunityofthreede-cadestostakeoutanewhomeinAlberta.Shesleaving-thatsthesadthingHamiltonsaidandshesgoingtobesorelymissed.ProactivelyprotectingtheSlaveRiverTheinnovationawardisde-signedtorecognizepeopleandorganizationswhotakeauniqueapproachtorecreationandPad-dlefestisnotjustauniqueap-proachtorecreationsaidVanDamwhonominatedtheannualsummerfestivalforitsaward.PartofthereasonPaddlefeststartedwastoraiseawarenessforbothprofessionalpaddlersandyoungfamilieshavetakenthefestivaltoanotherlevel.ItsimpossibletodothiswithoutthesupportofsomanyothervolunteerssaidCtthefestivalcoordina-tor.ItsabighonourfortheFortSmithPaddlingClubitsbeensoactivethisyear.PaddlefestsharedtheIn-novationAwardwiththenewTumivutprogrambasedinUlukhaktokwhichbringsthecommunitytogetherthroughtraditionalformsofrecreation.ThisyearsNWTRPAAwardofExcellencewenttotheNWTJudoAssocia-tionwhiletheScottMcAdamYouthLeadershipAwardwenttoInuviksJacobPeffer.InthecontinuedspiritofcommunityandvolunteerismCtreturnedhomefromYel-lowknifeonOct.9withGreensawardwhowasunabletoat-tendthefunctionasshewasbusypackingforhermove.ThewinnersweregiftedworksbyNorthernphotog-rapherDaveBrosha.Itsimpossibletodothiswithoutthesupportofsomanyothervolunteers.GenevieveCtSlaveRiverPaddlefestPhotoPaulBannisterPhotoPatti-KayHamiltonGenCtpickedupanInnovationAwardonbehalfoftheFortSmithPaddlingClubforitsannualSlaveRiverPaddlefest.JunevaGreenwasawardedtheHonoraryLifetimeMembershipAwardforhercommitmenttosportoverthelast30yearsmostnotablywiththeFortSmithSkiClub.
