8TuesdayOctober142014JBThostsowncross-coTerritorialeventcancellationcantsJBTCrossCounGrade121CananOlvera2TaylorPorter3RuenTrueGrade31Sebastia2SarahP3OlieJohSPORTSRECREATIONRUNNINGTeachersatFortSmithsJosephBurrTyrrellElementarySchoolputtogetheralast-minutecross-countrymeetfortheirGrade1to6studentsaftertheirterritorialchampionshipswerecancelled.FinnJohnsonracesintheGrade56heat.NevaOlveraleftAmelieAubreySmithDanicaBurkeandDevynDrevartgetreadytorun.ByDALICARMICHAELJustwhenitlookedlikestudentsfromFortSmithsJosephBurrTyrrellElemen-tarySchoolwouldntgetthechancetofin-ishtheircross-countryrunningseasonteachersandvolunteersfromthecommu-nitycametogethertoholdalocalcham-pionshipmeet.TheJBTCubsCrossCountryteamspenttheafternoonofFridayOct.10racingaroundtheFortSmithSkiClubtrailsusu-allyquietinthewarmermonths.Theterritorialcross-countryrunningchampionshipsweresupposedtobeheldonSept.26inFortProvidence.Accord-ingtoNWTStudentAthleticFederationspresidentFraserOlivertheeventwascan-celledduetoamiscommunicationbetweentheorganizationandthehostingDehGahElementarySchool.InsteadoflettingtheirlittleathletesseasondwindleandfizzletoanendFortSmithsupportersdecidedtotakeactionbysettinguptheirownevent.StudentsfromGrades1through6wereinvitedtoparticipateintheraceswhichstretchedfromonetotwokilometresinlengthdependingontheagegroup.Afterreceivingsnowandfrostearlierinthemonthteachersandstudentsalikewererelievedtohaveasunnywarmdayoffriendlycompetition.LookingtothefutureTheteachersofJBTadmittedtherewasanalternativegoalinhostingthesome-what-imprompturunningevent.Overthelastseveralyearsthecommu-nityhasworkedtoincreaseitssportinginfrastructure.Anewrubberizedtracktheonlyoneintheterritorywasoneofthehighlightsoftheinitiative.WiththenewtrackfinallyinuseFortSmithrecreationalenthusiastsareeagertosharewhattheyhavewithotherrun-nersintheterritory.EventuallyaccordingtosportvolunteerLauraAubreytheschoolwouldliketohosttheterritorialcross-countrychampionshipmeeteveryyear.
