NationalTourismWeekacelebrationofNWTTourismbureauwantslocalstoexploretheirownbackyardsIndustryTourism12TuesdayJune172014NationalAboriginalDayJune212014AllofthestaffatKaeserswishyouahappyAboriginalDayByDALICARMICHAELNorthwestTerritoriesTour-ismpridesitselfonbringinginthousandsofinternationaltouriststoexploreandenjoythestunningsceneryanduniqueculturesoftheNorth.Infactinthe2012-13scalyear76000visitorsbroughtinover100million.Butwhenitcomestoget-tingpeopleintheNorthtoplantheirvacationswheretheyalreadylivetheagencyadmitsthereissomeworktodo.Wehavepeoplefromallovertheworldvisitingthisbeautifulandspectacularplaceandsometimespeo-pledontactuallyknowthebeautyisintheirownback-yardbecauseweresobusylivingandworkingheresaidCathieBolstadthenewex-ecutivedirectorofNorthwestTerritoriesTourism.AsaresultNWTTourismhaslaunchedseveralmarketingcampaignstoencouragelocaltourismandhelpNorthernop-eratorsincreasetrafc.NationalTourismWeekacelebrationofCanadasstrongtourismindus-tryfromJune16to20seemedlikethenaturaltimetolaunchthenewplatform.NWTConventionBureaucreatedOnFridayeveningacon-tributionagreementbetweenNorthwestTerritoriesTourismandTourismandInvestmentITIwassignedinHayRivertoestablishaNorthwestTer-ritoriesConventionBureau.Itsnotaplaceitsnotabuildingitsactuallyadedi-catedresourceBolstadsaid.Theplanistoestablishframeworksfortourismorga-nizationstohelpbusinessesbetterpursuesalesleadsandpreparecompetitivebidsformeetingsconferencescon-certsandconventionshostedintheNWT.Theframeworksaretobeestablishedbythenewyear.InthemeantimeBolstadsaidthefocusisonestablish-ingprotocolsandprocessesforthelargercommunitiesthroughouttheveregions.Werequiteexcitedaboutitbecausemeetingsconfer-encesandconventionsac-tuallybringpeopletotheNorthBolstadsaid.Theybenetentirecommunitiesitsanabilitytopursuethebusinessmarketinastron-gerway.SpectacularNWTcontestInordertobattleamud-dledsocialmediamarketingenvironmentwhereitseasyforvacationerstogetbom-bardedwithanoverloadofinformationNWTTourismdesignedtheExploreYourSpectacularNorthwestTer-ritoriescontesttocapturetheattentionoflocalslookingtotravel.ThecontestisonlyopentoNWTresidentswithtrippackagestotheveregionsofferedasprizes.Entrantslloutaballotonlineandthosewhoalsosendinpho-tosfromtheNWTwillau-tomaticallybeenteredasecondtime.Thecontestisconductedinpartnershipwithbusi-nessesIndustryITIandregionaltourismofcesandrunsuntilJune22.Toentergotohttpexploreyourspec-tacularnwt.comhome.TourismtrainingOnJune12NWTTour-ismbroughttogetherrepre-sentativesfromtheCana-dianTourismCommissionCTCthefederalcrownagencyforpromotingCan-adatotherestoftheworldasatourismdestinationandtheTourismIndustryAsso-ciationofCanadaTIACanadvocacyorganizationforpeopleinthetourismbusiness.Theyconductedstake-holdermeetingsinYellow-knifeandHayRiverwithNWTtourismoperators.WegaveeverybodyanopportunitytoseewhatboththeCTCandTIACaredoingtopromoteCanadabecauseourproductispartofCana-daspromotioninternation-allyBolstadsaid.Themeetingfocusedheav-ilyonhowtodealwiththeproliferationofmediaplat-formsandthespreadofin-formationusingsocialmedia.HospitalityscholarshipOnMondayNWTTour-ismannouncedthelaunchofascholarshipprogramforlocalstudentsstudyinghos-pitalityintheterritory.Wewanttoencouragestu-dentstothinkaboutthisasacareeropportunityfortheNorthBolstadsaid.Thefirstscholarshipsawardedareworth1500.AgolftournamentheldinHayRiveronJune13providedanopportunityformembersofNWTTourismtomeetwhileraisingmoneyfortheschol-arshipfund.Tourismisavitalindustryandhasthepotentialtodriveeconomicgrowthandoppor-tunityineveryregionoftheNWTITIMinisterDavidRamsaysaidinapressrelease.AnopportunityforcelebraNWACPresidentMichleAudetteByDALICARMICHAELWithAboriginalDayfastapproachingitisimportanttonotonlycelebrateandsharetheculturesofAboriginalpeo-plesinCanadabutalsotore-ectonissuestheystillface.ThiswasthesentimentsharedbyNativeWomensAs-sociationofCanadaNWACpresidentMichleAudettewhenTheJournalcaughtupwithherlastweek.SharingculturesthegoodandthebadIseeourselvesasbridgesbetweenthenativeandnon-nativepeoplegreatambas-sadorsAudettesaid.ShestressedtheimportanceofusingAboriginalDaytoshareAboriginalculturestraditionsandknowledgewithpeoplewhomightnotother-wisehaveanopportunitytolearnaboutthem.Wehavetoreachnon-nativepeopletosaywhoweweretosaywhowearetodayandwherewewanttogoandiftheyrewillingtopaddlewithusonthesamecanoeorbesideusAudettesaid.Itsanimportantdayandformeitshouldbelikethiseveryday.ForyearsNWAChasbeenpartneringwithbothAb-originalandnon-Aboriginalorganizationsonanumberofinitiatives.TheirhighestproledandmostrecenthasbeenapushforaninquiryintomurderedandmissingAboriginalwomeninCan-ada.AccordingtoanRCMPreportreleasedinMaytherewereapproximately1181Aboriginalwomenmurderedorwhowentmissingbetween1980and2012.Ofthose164arestillreportedmissingand1017areconrmedhomicidevictims.Whilestatslikethesearesoberingtheyareanimpor-tantpartofunderstandingthemodernAboriginalidentityAudettesaid.ItsaremindertotheCa-nadianpopulationthatweresoaliveandsodedicatedtoArtsCultureAboriginalDayNativeWomensAssociationofCanadapresidentMichleAudettePhotocourtesyofNorthwesternTerritoriesTourismNewinitiativesfromNorthwestTerritoriesTourismencouragelocalstotraveltheNWT.
