HealthWellnessElders15TuesdayJune172014CanadianNaturalResourcesLimitedwww.cnrl.comembracesadoingitrightphilosophyinourmissionstatement.AspartofthatapproachwestrivetobuildandmaintainmutuallybeneficialrelationshipsinourcommunityandAboriginalrelationsactivitiesthroughunderstandingrespectandcooperation.CanadianNaturalResourcesLimitedCanadianNaturalisaproudsupporteroftheFortChipewyanEldersCareCentrewhichallowselderswhorequirelong-termandcontinuingcaretoremaininthecommunity.CongratulationstothecommunityofFortChipewyanandtheMikisewCreeFirstNationontheopeningofthisimportantfacilityByMARIACHURCHNinenewFortChipewyangraduatesfromauniquelytailoredKeyanoCollegeprogramwillbejoiningthestaffatthecommuni-tysbrandnewKahkiyowKeykanowEldersCareHome.Afternineweeksofin-tensivetrainingwhichin-cludedweeksofCreeandDenelanguageandcultureclassespalliativecareanddementiasensitivityandtraumaawarenesscoursesthegraduateswerewel-comedintotheelderscarehomewithacelebrationlastweek.Thecommunityisal-mostasexcitedaboutthatpreparationprogramforourfutureemployeesasthenewECHelderscarehomeitselfBeverlyRob-soncarehomedirectortoldTheJournalinanemaillastweek.JanetLowndesprojectmanagerwithKeyanoCol-legesaidtailoredcoursesarenotanewphenomenonatthecollegebuttheFortChipewyanprogramtooktailoringtoawholenewlevelintermsofcommunityengagement.Theelderscarehomeiscommunityownedsoitsacommunity-designedprogramshesaid.Itwasthelevelthepercentageofthecommunityfocus.Itwasthefactthateverybodywhowasbroughtinwasex-pectedtokeepthatfocusinmind.ItwastailoredtoFortChipewyaninawaythatwasexplicitlyandspecicallyfortheFortChipewyanEldersCareHome.Manyoftheinstructorsselectedtotrainthestu-dentswerefromFortChipaswell.InsteadofKeyanoCol-legeemployeesofferingthetrainingwewentoutintothecommunityLowndessaid.TrainersincludedRitaMartenfromtheAtha-bascaTribalCouncilwhotaughttheCreelanguagecourseAliceRigneyofFortChipewyanwhotaughttheDenelanguagecourseandPatFlettaShellemployeewhotaughtthelifemanagementandtrainingcourse.Lowndessaidthepro-gramwhichwasacommu-nity-requestedinitiativeoftheMikisewCreeFirstNa-tionandthegovernmentofAlbertatsFortChipewy-ansneedsintwowaystocreatesustainedemploy-mentopportunitiesinthecommunityandtoprovidethecarehomeresidentswithlocalstaff.Theseareeldersitsasmallcommunityanditwouldbeniceforthemtoseepeopletheyknownotallstrangers.Itwouldbeniceforthemtohearpeoplespeaktothemintheirlanguageshesaid.Thegraduateswillllvari-oussupportstaffrolesinthekitchenandashousekeepersandjanitors.Thesupportstaffwillbeengagedwiththeel-dersasmuchastheprofes-sionalsareevenmoresoLowndessaid.Withtheirspecializedtrainingindementiaandpalliativecaresensitivitythestaffarewelltrainedtosupporttheeldersduringtheirfrequentinteractionsshesaid.Thecelebrationtowel-comethenewgraduatestotheelderscarehometookplaceonJune9withelderMargorieGlaneldMiki-sewCreeFirstNationChiefSteveCourtoreilleandmanyproudcommunitymembersinattendance.FortChipelderscarehometobestaffedbycommunityPhotocourtesyofBeverleyRobsonFromleftgraduatesMirandaMercrediSarahNewmanRhondaWanderingspiritDorothyWhiteheadDonnaMercrediShirleyVermillionChevonneDeneKarenMcDonaldandRodneyMartenarewelcomedattheFortChipewyanelderscarehomelastweekasnewemployees.
