13TuesdayJune172014SecondannualFieldLawAwardsannouncedGirlsgardensschoolsandartsgetfundingforwinninginitiativesByDALICARMICHAELFourcommunityorga-nizationsintheNorthwestTerritorieswillbenetfromthesecondannualFieldLawCommunityFundProgramafterthewinnerswerean-nouncedonJune9.FieldLawarmwithop-erationsinYellowknifeCal-garyandEdmontondonatedatotalof15000tovariousinitiativesintheNWTallofwhichwereselectedthroughanonlinevotingprocessfol-lowedbyajuryvote.Buildingstrongrelation-shipswiththecommunitiesweserveisimportanttousJackWilliamsapartnerattheYellowknifeofcesaidinapressrelease.Werehappytobeabletocontributetoourcommunitiesneedsandmakeadifferenceinthelivesandfutureofthoseweliveworkandinteractwithonadailybasis.Thisyear84organizationsthroughoutAlbertaandtheNorthwestTerritoriesap-pliedforthecontestwith13ofthosegroupsvyingfromtheNorth.Theselectionsweremadebasedonseveralcriteriaincludingimpactoftheinitiativeonthecommunityclarityoftheideapresentednoveltywithinthecommu-nityandthenumberofon-linevotes.FOXYPeerLeaderRetreatFOXYFosteringOpeneXpressionamongYouthisasexualhealthandpeerleadershipprogramforyoungwomenacrosstheNorthwestTerritories.Itsteachingsarebasedinpeerleadershipandthearts.InadditiontoeventsheldthroughouttheyearFOXYishostingitssecondPeerLeaderRetreatattheBlach-fordLakeLodgeinJuly.Theretreatlastsninedaysandwith24girlsaged13through17attendingthisyearitssettobethebiggestturnoutyet.WithfundingfromitsFieldLawawardFOXYwillbeaddingadigitalelementtotheretreat.Theideaistoteachthegirlshowtousevideohard-wareandsoftwaretosharetheirstories.ItsareallytangibleskillforalotofyoungpeopleintheNorthrightnowbecausetheyretechsavvytheyknowwhattheyredoingwhenitcomestocreatingthosethingsbutsharingthemandmakingthemahighqualityproductissomethingthattheycanusesometrainingonNancyMacNeillFOXYcoordinatorsaid.LutselKeCommunityGardenSince2008theLutselKeCommunityGardenhasbeenaplacewherecommunitymemberscanconnectwhileworkingtogether.WehaveworkpartieswhenweharvestweinviteeveryonetothegardenStephaniePooleavolunteerwiththegardensaid.Inthepastwewouldhavediffer-entkindsofworkshopslikecompostingworkshops.Wethinkaboutpreservingwemightdosomeworkshopsonthatthisyearcanninganddryingthings.Poolesaidthatsheandherfellowvolunteershopetoexpandoperationswithinthegarden.WeledehCatholicSchoolForthepasttwoyearsWeledehCatholicSchoolstu-dentsandtheircommunitymembershavemadetheschoolabetterplacebyworkingto-gethertoimprovetheiroutdoorinfrastructure.TheirFieldLawawardmoneywillcontributetoaschool-wideinitiativetheWeledehCatholicSchoolCom-munityPlaygroundProject.Theprojectconsistsofthreephasesreplacingtheprimaryschoolplaygroundinstallinganelementaryschoolplay-groundandbuildinganout-doorclassroomwithextragreenspacetoplayin.Withthesecondphasesettowrapupthisweekfundraisingeffortsforthenal70000phasehaveofciallybegunwiththeawardedFieldLawmoney.ItsaschoolplaygroundbutwherewerelocatedtherearentanyotherplaygroundsinclosedistancessaidtheschoolsprincipalSimoneGessler.Itreallyisacommunityplaygroundandduringnon-schoolhoursourplaygroundisreallywellutilized.AuroraArtsSocietysVisualArtsGalleryTheGalleryon47thSt.TheAuroraArtsSocietytookoveradministrationofTheGalleryon47thSt.inJanuaryandsincethenhasshowcasedseveralex-hibitionsandlooksforwardtoshowingamixofcom-mercialandnon-commer-cialartistswhichiswheretheirFieldLawfundingwillbeused.MarcusJacksonpresidentoftheAuroraArtsSocietyexplainedthattheAuroraArtsSocietyanditsaflia-tionsaresomeoftheonlyor-ganizationsintheNWTthatofferpeer-reviewedshowsnecessaryforaworkingart-istsresumeiftheywishtoapplyforcertaingrants.ionsharingandreectioniscussesAboriginalDaybeingalivetokeepingourculturalidentitysoaliveAu-dettesaid.Itsanimportantdaytoremindourselvesofallthecommitmentsthejobsalltheworkthatwedoshouldberecognizedorrespected.AudettewhoisInnufromnortheasternQuebecoftentravelsacrossthecountrywithNWACworkingtoaddressAboriginalwomensissuesfromVancouvertoInuviktoHalifax.Shesaidwhileitisimportanttoacknowledgetheautonomyofthedis-tinctculturesfoundineachAboriginalcommunityitsalsoimportanttorememberthatultimatelyeachofthosecommunitiesareaftersimi-largoalsnamelypreservingtheircultures.WhenImintheNorth-westTerritorieswithpeoplewhogivemedrymeatorshortheydancewelaughtheresnolongerthousandsNorthernersAwardsofkilometresthatseparatemyselffromthembecauseImfromtheInnucommu-nityAudettesaid.AudettesaidforthersttimethisyearshewillbecelebratingAboriginalDaywithherfamilyandhercom-munityinUashatMakMali-otenamQue.ImgoingtobeinmycommunityImgoingtobewithmyfamilyshesaid.IwontbeatabigeventIthinkforthersttime.IllbewiththepeopleIloveandhavingaglassofjuiceandsayingthisisqualitytimejustforuswhichisreallyrare.ForthosecelebratingintheterritoryAudetteen-couragesthemtouseAb-originalDaytocreateasenseofunity.Thiseventshouldbecel-ebratedalsowiththeNWTgovernmentandalltheAb-originalgovernmentsshesaid.Wehavetoextendourhandtoeachotherandsaytheresgreatthingsthatwedoandwehavetoac-knowledgethatday.Letsdoittogether.Wehavetoextendourhandtoeachotherandsaytheresgreatthingsthatwedoandwehavetoacknowledgethat
