14TuesdayJune172014BroughttoyoubyTheNWTMtisNationByDALICARMICHAELGraduatesfromtheAtha-bascaDeltaCommunitySchoolADCSinFortChipewyanwillsoonbecelebratingtheirsecondoftwohighschoolgraduationceremonies.OnMay29thesixgradu-atingstudentsewfromFortChipewyantoFortMcMur-raytoparticipateintheTradi-tionalCelebrationofAchieve-mentTCOAatKeyanoCol-legenowinits17thyear.TheTraditionalCelebrationhonoursFirstNationsMtisandInuitstudentsfromtheWoodBuffaloRegiongradu-atingfromhighschool.Ninehighschoolsfromtheregionsawapproximately100studentsparticipateinthecelebrationsellingoutthecolleges500-seattheatreastheaudiencelledwithfriendsandfamily.KieshaSaddleback19wasoneoftheADCSgraduateswhomadethejourney.Afterabusydayofyingoutearlyinthemorningshoppingforlastminutenecessitiesdress-ingupfortheeventanddoingsomenalorganizingSaddle-backsaidtheceremonywaswellworththewait.Itwasactuallyaprettygoodexperience.IwentuponstageandgotmyfeatherandsweetgrassSaddlebacksaid.ImhappythatIcamealongwaytoactuallygraduatefromhighschool.OneofthemainthingsisthatIgottheremyself.JamesPiche-Cardinal18alsoattendedtheceremony.Improudofmyselfforbeingoneoftheonlyboystograduatehesaid.InfacthewastheonlymalestudentfromADCStoreceivehisdiplomathisyear.Piche-CardinalsaidthatoneofthehighlightsoftheeveningforhimwastheentertainmentprovidedbyaNunavutduoInuitthroatboxerNelsonTagoonaandrapperShaunaSeeteenak.Saddlebacksaidsheisntcertainwhatshewilldofol-lowinggraduationbuthasap-pliedtoaparamedicsprogramatKeyanoCollegeinadditiontotheEdmonton-basedWomenBuildingFuturesprogram.Pi-che-Cardinalsayshewillworkforthenextyearwithhopesofattendingschoolinthesouthtostudytradesorpoliticalscienceinthefallof2015.17yearsofhonouringgradstraditionallyJuliaMcDougallahighschoolteacherandoneofthefoundingmembersoftheTCOAboardsaidthisyearsceremonywasuniqueforafewreasons.ThisyearwasreallyquitespectacularbecausewehadFirstNationsdancerswehadtheMtisdancersandwehadthedrummersonstageandthenwehadthethroatsing-ersMcDougallsaid.AllthreeAboriginalpeopleswereuponstageperform-ingintheirownway.ForthersttimeinTCOAshistorygraduatesweregiftedanabaloneshellinadditiontotheceremonialeaglefeatherssweetgrassandminiatureMtissasheshandedoutannually.McDougallsaidthetradi-tionalgiftsweremuchmoremeaningfulthanplaquesandotheritemshandedoutinpre-viousyearsandaremeanttobesymbolsofachievementandblessingsforthefuturehandedfromelderstothegraduates.AttheendofthismonthonJune28thestudentswillgettobreakouttheirbestdudsforasecondtimeinalargecommunity-widecelebration.ADCSstudentscelebratetraditionallocalgradsEducationHighSchoolGradPhotocourtesyofJuliaMcDougallPhotocourtesyofKaraMundyAttheTraditionalCelebrationofAchievementstudentsweregiventraditionalgiftsofeaglefeatherssweetgrassminiatureMtissashesandforthersttimethisyearanabaloneshell.AthabascaDeltaCommunitySchoolgraduatesattheTraditionalCelebrationofAchievementfromleftSierraCourtoreilleKieshaSaddlebackJamesPiche-CardinalMadelineMartenKaishaMarcelandIvannaAntoine-Whitehead.
