8TuesdayMarch262013THANKYOUtoalloftheparticipantsforcomingouttothe2013FortSmithFishingDerbySeeyounextyearLutselKeChipewyandictionarycelebrateslocaldialectEducationAboriginalLanguagesByMEAGANWOHLBERGThetraditionaldialectofLutselKeChipewyanwillbeimmortalizedinawrittenandaudiodictionarylikelybytheendofthesummerthankstothecombinedeffortsofthecommunityandtheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilSSDEC.ItwillbereallyreectiveofthedialectoftheLutselKeDeneBrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendentofSSDECandleadontheproj-ecttoldTheJournal.WerecognizethefactthatAboriginallanguagesarechangingsomewhathesaid.Thewordsinthecollectionareareectionoftheorigi-naloldformofthelanguage-whatpeoplewouldcallthepureformofthelanguage.UsingtheFortResolutiondictionaryasatemplatetheLutselKevolumewillinclude1200additionalwordsthatel-dersinthecommunityhavedeemedimportantresultinginamassivetextofnearly400pagesofwordsandillustra-tionsdesignedspecicallyforthecommunityofLutselKe.LiketherstChipewyandictionarytheworkwillin-cludeanaudioCDaswellasanonlineaudioresourcetohearthewordspronouncedbyauentspeakerfromany-whereintheworld.Eldersandcommunitygroupscontributedtheirwordsuggestionslastfallpassingonthetranslationandscrib-ingworktotwolocalwell-respectedtranslatorsandwritersDennisDrygeeseandBerthaCatholique.Kaulbacksaidhewillmeetwiththegroupofeldersagainnextmonthtonalizethewordlistandhopesthatbytheendofthesummerthebookwillbereadyforpublication-justintimeforback-to-school.ThistimehesaidtheworkwillbealoteasiersincethetemplatefromtheFortResdictionaryalreadyexists.Stillhesaidthebookwillbepurposelyuniquetothecommunity.WellmodifyittogiveitauniquelookforLutselKeintheirdialecthesaid.Thecoverwillbedifferentbutthelayoutwillbesimilar.WellbetryingtousepicturesfromLut-selKeasmuchaspossibleofkidsthegeographythearea.Itsacommunitydiction-arysowewantthecommu-nitytoreallyidentifywiththebook.Iftheydoitbecomesamoreusefulresourceandtoolsomethingtheycanbereallyproudofheadded.TheLutselKedictionaryisthethirdinaseriesofAb-originallanguagetextbookstoemergefromtheSouthSlaveinrecentyearswiththerstbeingaSouthSlaveydiction-arymadeinpartnershipwithKatlodeecheFirstNationel-dersinHayRiverfollowedbytherst-evercomprehen-siveChipewyandictionarylaunchedlastfallinFortRes.TheSSDEChasalsobeenresponsibleforhundredsofotherAboriginallanguagebooksalsopublishedinCree.Kaulbackwhohasbeende-velopingclassroomresourcesforAboriginallanguagein-structorswiththeschooldi-visionsince2005saidhehasmoreideasforthefuturethatwouldfurtherbolsterthepro-motionofAboriginallanguagesintheregionandbeyond.Hisdreamprojecthesaidisanetymologicaldictionaryexplainingtherootsfromwhichwordsarederived.Moreoftenthannotwhenyousitdownandtalkwithel-dersaboutwordliststheylltalkaboutwhatthatwordmeans-theliteraltranslationofitKaulbacksaid.Forpeopletoreallyunderstandthelanguageitsnotjustknowingwhatthewordisbuttheessencebehindthewordaswell.Eldershavethat-itsjustamatteroftry-ingtocollectthat.ThoughnosuchprojectiscurrentlyintheworksKaulbacksaiditcouldonlyimprovethediresituationofAboriginallanguagesintheNorthwestTerritories.Themoreweprovideintermsofdictionariesandeldersstoriesthemorewestimulateaninterestinthelanguageandagreaterchancethelanguagehastothrivehesaid.PhotoSherylOlveraWewantthecommunitytoreallyidentifywiththebook.Iftheydoitbecomesamoreusefulresourceandtoolsomethingtheycanbereallyproudof.BrentKaulbackBrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendentoftheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCoun-cilisfacilitatingthecreationofaChipewyandictionaryforthecommunityofLutselKe.Visitusatwww.slfn196.comPhone867872-4950Fax867872-5154P.O.Box1470FortSmithNTCongratulationsonthesuccessofthe2013FortSmithFishingDerbySmithsLandingFirstNationEmailmanagerslfn196.com
